Germany Grants Ukraine's SES Nearly €6M in Robotic Firefighting Package

Germany has delivered a €5.7 million (roughly $6.6 million) package of firefighting equipment to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (SES), including robotic systems designed to operate in conditions deemed too dangerous for emergency personnel.The German Embassy in Ukraine confirmed the handover to European Pravda on Tuesday, Aug. 11, detailing a shipment that combines remote-controlled systems with traditional emergency vehicles.JOIN US ON TELEGRAMFollow our coverage of the war on the @Kyivpost_official.“Amid Russia’s brutal war, the challenges facing Ukraine’s State Emergency Service have become even more difficult,” Katrin Buchholz, Germany’s Chargé d’Affaires, told European Pravda.Robotic systems built for danger zonesThe package centers on four robotic firefighting systems – the Alpha Robotics Wolf R1, LUF 60, LUF-CRV, and Magirus AirCore TAF60.The robots are built to extinguish fires and operate in environments too risky for human rescuers. The AirCore TAF60, for instance, is a remote-controlled unit designed to spray nebulized water or foam over distances of up to 60 meters (about 197 feet) while staying clear of collapse or heat hazards.According to European Pravda, the systems were delivered under the project “Support to the State and Municipal Emergency Management in Ukraine,” implemented by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) on behalf of the German government.In a broader effort to preserve emergency and military personnel, Ukraine has increasingly turned to robots for performing dangerous tasks. According to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense on June 9, ground robotic systems were reported to be a regular presence on the front line, performing logistical tasks and providing combat support, as well as helping with medical evacuation.Part of a decade-long partnershipOther than the robots, Berlin also handed over fire tankers, a heavy evacuation tractor, trucks fitted with crane manipulators, buses and minibuses for personnel transport, portable fire pumps and booster pumps, and personal protective equipment for rescuers.“Our partnership has lasted for more than 10 years and goes far beyond the transfer of equipment,” Buchholz said, adding that Germany-Ukraine ties consist of “strengthening institutions, sharing experience and developing joint capabilities.”The handover follows a similar delivery in July, when Germany provided SES with 10 sets of rescue equipment intended to help pull survivors from rubble, Ukrainska Pravda reported.Ukraine’s emergency responders have also been active abroad – in early August, a Ukrainian firefighting team helped extinguish a forest fire near a French town in the Gironde region, arriving after a 52-hour drive across Europe as part of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
