German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul Arrives in Kyiv

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul arrived in Kyiv on Saturday morning, Aug. 22, DW reported. He noted the contrast between the summer vacation season in Germany and the situation in Ukraine, where he said the civilian population continues to face daily Russian attacks. “We see all this suffering, we see how this country is fighting, and we will continue to support it,” Wadephul said. He stated that Germany has become Ukraine’s most important ally regarding the volume of bilateral military, political, and economic assistance, assuring that this support will continue. Preparing for winter and negotiations Wadephul emphasized the need to prepare Ukraine and its infrastructure for the upcoming winter. He noted that Russian forces previously targeted critical infrastructure during the colder months. The German minister said that he and his French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot, have sent a written appeal to multiple countries requesting assistance to ensure Ukraine can survive the winter. He also stressed the importance of a united European stance, stating that Europe must show that Russian President Vladimir Putin will not achieve his goals in Ukraine. Wadephul added that while Germany is ready to support Ukraine in potential future negotiations with Russia, continued support for Kyiv is necessary for those negotiations to take place. The hybrid meeting will be co-chaired by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, and French President Emmanuel Macron, who will participate via video link. European Council President António Costa is also expected to attend, following the recent opening of EU accession negotiations with Ukraine. On Friday, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha stated that Kyiv expects “distinguished guests” and the announcement of new bilateral aid packages during the Independence Day events.
