Following her latest victory, Hunter Bell said: “It wasn’t easy. It’s never easy, guys, so you know. “I did feel really calm, really confident. I have been on a winning streak, and I have had a lot of failures before when I have been the favourite. “I really tried to relax everything. I know what I am doing. Not overcomplicate it. Stay in a good position and when it’s time to go, get going.” She added: “That last 150 is always my favourite part of the race. And it was really nice to come down the home stretch and know that I had it. “It’s so special, another gold this year. I am really hoping to make it four in September. “There is still a lot left of the season. I haven’t done a paced 800m yet, I have one coming up with the speedy girls. I am really excited to throw my hat into the ring there. It’s such an exciting time. I am really happy.” In March, the former cyber security software saleswoman began the season with the World Indoors 1500 metres crown in the Polish city of Torun. On July 31 in Glasgow, she was the Commonwealth Games champion over 800 metres as many top names skipped the trip. And if she is the top runner in the women’s 500 metres at the inaugural Ultimate World Championship in Budapest – where there is a £111,000 payday – it would be some clean sweep over seven months. Portuguese rival Salome Afonso tried to slow it down but Hunter Bell waited and waited and then with 200 metres to go she put the hammer down and accelerated away. She copies Scottish middle-distance star Laura Muir who was champion in this event in 2018 and 2022. And it upgrades the silver medal she claimed in Rome two years ago when she was behind Irishwoman Ciara Mageean. It is a poignant run as she studied geography at the University of Birmingham and knows the city well. After that, she left for California to study business and put on hold her athletics career. Yet she is making the most of her time since returning to the sport and hooking up with Keely Hodgkinson’s M11 Track club. Meanwhile, Commonwealth champion Jazmin Sawyers leapt 6.99 metres – a lifetime best outdoors – to finish with silver in the women’s long jump competition. The Stoke leaper, who had to wrap herself up in a pink blanket because of the cold, ruptured her right Achilles two years ago but produced her best set of jumps in her career. Italian Larissa Iapichino was the champion by only one centimetre. In the penultimate event – the women’s 4×400 metre relay – Britain claimed silver as they finished behind the Netherlands. The quartet of Yemi Mary John, Lina Nielsen, Nicole Yeargin and Emily Newnham ran a time of 3:21.68. Newnham tried to take on the formidable Femke Broeders-Bol down the final lap, which was a bold move. But she did not have enough in her legs to take a surprise gold – the Dutch came home first in 3:21.10. Comment now
