As though their sister has walked in on their 'no girls allowed' den, but the anger is coming from grown adults. Series creator Cliff Bleszinski has spoken up about the outrage, urging fans to "stop getting roped up into these BS culture wars," but things only got weirder with a Mags mod replacing 3,000 lines of dialogue with beeps and boops. Thankfully, Nexus has already delisted the mod. "Turn Mags Carter's dialogue into expressive Droid chatter: bubbly beeps, questioning whistles, grumbles, combat bursts and exaggerated panicked squeals," the description reads. "Each replacement follows its original line's length, pauses and changes in intensity." Mod author SlayerofThunder claims this was merely "the first release in a planned series of comedy voice replacement mods." But even if we take that explanation at face value, and assume the mod wasn't specifically targeting Mags during the anti-woke backlash stirred up by the same bad-faith actors who always seem to headline these stories, the optics of silencing a woman of color who's implied to be queer, at the height of a culture war pile-on, aren't exactly great. Hell, just look at the people who are outraged it got delisted. Gears Of War Has Always Been Political - Cliff Bleszinski Said As Much The outrage itself is entirely performative, with many proclaiming that the inclusion of a woman who doesn't conform to conventional beauty standards (who, lest I remind you, is busy fighting subterranean bugs) marks the series going political. Consultancy groups have even once again found themselves in the crosshairs of anti-woke snipers amid the dying whimpers of Gamergate 2.0, but on the other side of it, Bleszinski is tearing apart their argument with his under-barrel chainsaw. "Did everyone forget that, according to the lore of Gears of War, the war became so brutal that women were sent to 'farms' for impregnation to produce more soldiers?" he wrote. "And what about the Berserker being a female Locust, and the fact that Locusts reproduce in a monstrous way? But yeah, 'keep politics out of games,' RIGHT?!" It's hard to imagine a more ridiculous example of the culture-war rot surrounding E-Day than taking a character who's fighting for humanity's survival and deciding the real problem is that she dares to talk. Whatever the mod author's intentions, replacing nearly 3,000 lines of Mags' dialogue with droid noises doesn't look great, and it's hardly surprising that Nexus clamped down.
