GCC identifies 593 mosquito breeding hotspots in city, intensifies measures for prevention of dengue

As dengue cases continue to increase in the city, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has identified 593 hotspots for intensifying vector control activities. The number of dengue cases reported in Chennai Corporation zones increased to 767 on Monday, when compared to 654 on Sunday. The Chennai Corporation has started monitoring fever cases in the city as 5,296 fever cases have been reported in the month of September so far.A total of 3,697 workers has been engaged in vector control activity with each worker covering 80 to 100 houses per day. On Monday, a review of all staff of the public health department, including domestic breeding checkers, was conducted by commissioner G.S. Sameeran.He ordered intensified identification and destruction of breeding sources in vacant lands, commercial places, new construction sites, educational institutions, hostels, hospitals, government buildings, peridomestic area and inside the houses. A total of 11,02,385 houses has been checked, and 4,192 houses were found to have larvae in their houses.Mass source reduction work has been taken up in 1,127 government buildings, 1020 educational institutions, 383 hospitals, 8114 construction sites and commercial buildings.The GCC has imposed a fine of ₹5.91 lakh to penalise building owners responsible for mosquito breeding on their premises. Streetwise fogging, both outdoor and indoor, is being done to control adult mosquitos, officials said. Mosquito control activity has been intensified by regular review of work at the field, and by cross checking the documents, said an official. Awareness programs on mosquito breeding have been conducted for residents’ welfare associations and educational institutions.Besides, the GCC has ensured stock availability of drugs in all facilities for fever management. “GCC has intensified fever surveillance by collecting fever cases reported from hospitals, clinics, and labs. Fever cases discharged from the hospitals will be followed up for a period of three days. Details about school absentees have been collected daily for taking containment measures and to cross notify. A total 40 medical camps have been conducted in hotspot areas with distribution of nilavembu kudeneer. Breeding fines have been imposed in commercial places.
