Democrat Adam Hamawy, who treated Palestinians in Gaza during Israel’s genocide, has defeated Republican Gregg Mele to represent New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District. The 57-year-old former US Army combat surgeon campaigned against military assistance to Israel and other countries committing human rights violations. He has also condemned the war on Iran as “illegal and immoral”. In a May interview he accused Washington of “catering to special interests of the defense contractors and war mongers and with organizations like [American Israel Public Affairs Committee] AIPAC and Israel’s special interests.” Hamawy joined missions to Gaza in 2024 and 2025 through the Palestinian American Medical Association, with coordination from the World Health Organization.
