The American was hoping to make a name for himself at the 154th edition, nearly ten years since he won at Birkdale. He eventually sank the put at the next try as he was accused by the commentator of “throwing away shots”. And it proved to be costly as Spieth missed out on the cut for the weekend by finishing on +10. Fans couldn’t believe what they were watching as they admitted his showing gave them “the yips”. DeChambeau was presented with TV evidence and taken in a buggy to the scene of the offence after hitting a shot from Royal Birkdale’s worst no-go areas. A heated argument broke out after the American suggested he could QUIT the entire tournament, saying: “I’m not playing tomorrow.” He eventually emerged from the meeting with rules officials still fuming, but refused to talk to reporters before heading to the driving range to vent his frustration.
