The glam rock singer, whose real name is Paul Gadd, is accused of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 almost half a century ago.The 82-year-old is said to have lured the victim into his London home before touching the child's thigh, nibbling her ear and smelling her hair. He has been charged with eight counts of sexual abuse including unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13, indecent assault and gross indecency between 1978 and 1981.Today the defendant appeared on a videolink to plead not guilty to eight charges.Sitting with his arms folded, the bespectacled pensioner wearing a blue shirt, grey coat and green cap told Southwark Crown Court: 'Absolutely not guilty.'He spoke only to enter the pleas to the charges. Glitter expressed no emotion as the details of the charges were read out, sipping from an orange drink during the brief preliminary hearing. Judge Tony Baumgartner, the Recorder of Westminster, adjourned the case for a three-week trial starting on November 22 next year. The disgraced star sold 18 million records in the early 1970s and enjoyed transatlantic success with a string of hits. Glitter became famous in the 1970s after releasing singles including Do You Wanna Touch Me, I'm the Leader of the Gang and Rock and Roll.The latter was Glitter's breakout song, becoming one of the biggest hits of 1972 as it peaked at number two in the UK charts and made it into the top ten in the US.He spent much of the following year dominating the top ten, with singles I Didn't Know I Loved You (Till I Saw You Rock and Roll), Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah), and Hello Hello, I'm Back Again, all charting, according to a biography.Glitter achieved his first number one as 'Glittermania' peaked in the summer of 1973 with the release of I'm the Leader of the Gang (I Am).He then hit the top spot again in the autumn with I Love You Love Me Love.By the time Glitter appeared on the charts in 1984 with Another Rock and Roll Christmas and Dance Me Up, Glitter was playing more than 80 shows a year.Glitter no longer owns the master rights to his songs - meaning he no longer receives any royalties from his music.In 2019, his song Rock and Roll Part 2 featured in hit movie Joker, but rights holders insisted he would not receive any earnings.
