Ganja gets dearer in Coimbatore after intense crackdown by police

With continuing police action against narcotics, availability of ganja has reportedly fallen across Coimbatore, triggering a corresponding increase in its price in the illegal market, according to police sources.A zipper packet of ganja of 8-10 grams, which used to be sold for about ₹500, was now being sold for over ₹1,000. Though a highly potent medical-grade cannabis called ‘OG Kush’ had been seized from Coimbatore a few times in the past, there were very few takers for the variety due to its premium price, said police sources involved in anti-narcotic operations.Commissioner of Police N. Kannan said the increase in the price of ganja in the illegal market was a direct impact of the crackdown on the drug by the police. “It indicates that the inflow and circulation of the drug have reduced significantly,” he said.With the police having expanded investigations into the clientele of persons arrested for selling ganja and other drugs in Coimbatore, users have also stopped contacting peddlers via phone.An officer from the Coimbatore District (Rural) Police said that peddlers were found to have been adding adulterants to ganja to make up for the shortage. The officer added that those who had been arrested for peddling ganja in the past and currently out on bail are being monitored.The police have also tightened their grip on the smuggling of narcotics from other States, and the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) of the Coimbatore city police recently arrested two men who used an ambulance to traffick ganja from Andhra Pradesh to Coimbatore, bypassing vehicle checks.“The PEW arrested over 15 persons for drug peddling in July alone. Seized vehicles include five cars, an autorickshaw, an ambulance and eight two-wheelers.
