Starglider 2 is not getting the Resident Evil treatment The Friday letters page imagines classic Amiga games getting the Resident Evil treatment, as one reader enjoys the Xbox’s new disc-to-digital option. I had no idea they were publishing the Alien Breed thing. I would, of course, welcome more like that but it had me wondering what else they could do even beyond more remasters. Could we ever get a full-blown Amiga remake? I doubt it but I think some of the 3D games would be perfect for it, as they were so ambitious but really limited by the technology of the time. My picks would be Starglider 2, Midwinter 1 and 2, Cybercon 3, Interphase, Hunter, and Simulcra. I’m sure those names mean absolutely nothing to those under a certain age, and even most older gamers have forgotten them now (I had to look up the names!), but they were amazing at the time and like nothing else on any other format, since consoles couldn’t do 3D and PCs weren’t really a thing at the time. If I could choose just one, it would probably be Starglider 2 but I’d love to see Cybercon 3 with modern textures or Hunter if it ran at more than 10fps and wasn’t a nightmare to control. All games with far more depth and imagination than most modern games, they just need a bit of a glow up.Corgi Expert, exclusive gaming analysis Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Games machineI had no idea that Commodore were back or especially that they had sort out all the trademark business, so that’s great to hear. I really hope they do a ‘retro’ Amiga 500 soon, as that was my first games machine and I have very fond memories of it. I will definitely be getting the Alien Breed collection and I really hope they do more. I assume you were thinking of people like Bitmap Brothers and Sensible Software when you said there should be collections dedicated to particular developers and I completely agree that would be great. Not all Amiga games were great but there were some real classics in there and things like Speedball 2 and Cannon Fodder are still very playable today and yet you never hear about them anymore because they were only really popular here.Cranston Keep it goingAnother nice little addition to Xbox with the digital option, along with smart resume and smart delivery this gen. I also don’t agree that Xbox needs the next gen right now. What they need is a big price cut for Xbox Series X. It’s been the best console I have owned and this is just me personally, but I don’t need a next gen Xbox right now, as long as Xbox Series X is supported I’m happy with that. It has tons of games available as it is, why do I need anymore? Just think if all those billions spent on buying studios was instead used to keep console costs down, I suppose hindsight is a wonderful thing.Icelticghost Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk Punch that boulderLooking at the way Capcom are highlighting the ‘V’ on Resident Evil Veronica, I have been wondering whether this is actually being positioned as the new Resident Evil 5? It already sounds like they are changing more for this remake than those before and could be a smart way to avoid tackling 5’s inherent issues, and setup a similarly canon-changing remake of 6. Dusk Golem’s recent comments could be supporting this, as technically 5 and 6 would not be remade but reimagined… or am I just over thinking this?Jesse GC: No! In fact, it’s a theory we’ve heard before. There’re many issues surrounding Resident Evil 5 and one is that in terms of canon it’s quite important, especially when it comes to Wesker. If his story arc was moved or retconned to be a part of Veronica, that could avoid the need to remake Resident Evil 5. Although at least Resident Evil 5 co-op makes it potentially worth saving; we’re not sure there’s anything worthwhile to redeem in Resident Evil 6. Quick loadWould any readers or Underboxers be able to say whether or not that No Man’s Sky runs better on their PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X after upgrading? I’ve been playing on PlayStation 4 for years now and thinking about moving to the Xbox Series X for faster load times and slightly better graphics. Hoping for better drawn distance also. I’ve platinumed the game already but I keep going back to it due to all the updates. Also, do your saves go with you?Bobwallett Familiar problemsI have huge sympathy for the developer if Microsoft immediately shuts them down, but I really don’t know what they are trying to achieve with Gears Of War: E-Day. They’ve done three games now and none of them have any idea more imaginative than fighting robots. They’ve all been good but none of them are any different than anything that was on the Xbox 360. Gears Of War used to be huge back in the day, I remember it, but that doesn’t guarantee that it’s always going to be huge. One of its things is that it basically invented the cover-based shooter but that’s everywhere now, so it doesn’t really register as a selling point. The whole grey and brown colour scheme is very 2000s, and I don’t think it’s been long enough for anyone to get all that nostalgic about it. Although oddly, I’ve noticed a lot of movies have this kind of look now, with that kind of brown, sludgy CGI you get a lot of. I assume that’s because they’re made with Unreal Engine, which, of course, Gears Of War helped to make famous. It all adds up to a series that has no reason to be getting more games. Especially when it’s sent out to die by being an Xbox console exclusive. I can’t wait for the Xbox tweet to reveal that 25 billion people have ‘played’ the game on Game Pass, probably accompanied by a photo of grinning Xbox execs, right before they lay off a few thousand more developers. GC is right, the demand for this to be something different should’ve come from the top. Although ideally it would’ve been a brand new IP. Trying to hang on to Halo, Gears Of War, and Fable is going to be the final nail in the coffin for Xbox, I believe.Kryton More than a bitRead people will be laid off from The Coalition, who just finished making Gears Of War: E-Day. What’s worse, this may happen before a certain bonus is given, which is bit underhanded. The bonus is the Metacritic bonuses tied to a game’s critical reception, which has been an established practice at game development studios for years. But if laid off before this, no bonus.TWO MACKS Don't miss Gaming news! Add us as a Preferred Source GameCentral has been delivering unique games news and reviews for over a decade It’s a trapSony is caught in a bit of a dilemma. One thing that I don’t think anyone has considered is that Microsoft is moving forward with Project Helix to force Sony’s hand. With unlimited cash reserves, they can afford for a console to flop and still benefit if it negatively affects the competition. The US pursued a similar strategy in the arms race against the USSR, effectively bankrupting the latter in the process. It’s only now, with trillions of dollars in debt that the empire is collapsing. Sony may get caught in Microsoft’s trap. They’d be better advised to pursue a similar path that Nintendo did when no longer able to compete, by pursuing a more disruptive approach and pull out of the metaphorical arms race. Continuing the metaphor, the only way to defeat the likes of Microsoft is through a form of asymmetrical warfare. They don’t need to compete with Microsoft, especially on their terms. But instead invest in their developers on platforms tailored to their strengths, not processing power. There’s room in the market for both Sony and Nintendo to release lower powered bespoke consoles with minor occasional updates in the vein of Apple. Like Nintendo does, release a steady stream of high-quality exclusives on eco systems that multiplatform developers can easily adapt to and release software for. Microsoft is doing a good job of making themselves irrelevant. The worst thing that either Sony or Nintendo can do is try to compete on a game that whoever enters it will lose. Processing power no longer cuts it, not for console manufacturers or the industry itself.Ciara Inbox also-ransI originally thought The Last Of Us was set in the Uncharted universe.
