Games Inbox: Is The Witcher 3 better than Skyrim?

The Witcher 3 free remaster is out today (YouTube) The Tuesday letters page looks forward to today’s The Witcher 3 Remastered release, as a reader wishes Pokémon Winds and Waves was taking longer. I think I’ll start a new save from scratch and try and experience the whole thing from beginning to end. I haven’t done that since it first came out. I hope I’m not remembering it all through rose-tinted glasses because in my mind, right now, it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played. Although I didn’t realise it had been quite as successful as it apparently was and that it had sold as much as Skyrim. The remaster and the new expansion should push it ahead and I’m glad of that, as I think it’s a much better game. I think CD Projekt Red are doing a great thing that will really benefit them in terms of people buying The Witcher 3 for the first time and existing fans making the effort to get the new expansion. If only more publishers realised that by being generous you often make more money than if you tried to cut corners. Some publishers are so hated for their microtransactions and unfair prices that people actively avoid them if they can – people would love to ignore EA if it wasn’t for EA Sports FC. But with someone like CD Projekt Red they can get over a disaster with Cyberpunk 2077’s launch and not only turn the game into a success but be forgiven for it as well. I feel that’s a lesson that both Sony and Microsoft have forgotten this generation.Tamol Let them cookI’m really hoping that Pokémon Winds and Waves will end up as a milestone sequel for the series, Pokémon’s equivalent of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. The trailer looks promising, but it’s hardly going to include all the bugs, busywork, and boring characters that have made the last few games so disappointing. (I swear, if I’m picking random items off the floor every two seconds again, like last time, I’m going to quit early and not bother.) I worry that they’ve not really had enough time though. It’s not even been four years since Scarlet and Violet yet and that doesn’t include the work they did on the DLC. It just doesn’t seem to be long enough to make a real breakthrough. Could you not just say: every new game session is different? I suppose daily life itself could be described as a roguelite. Even going to the supermarket could be described as roguelite since it’s never the same experience. Or do I still not understand? Back to Keep Driving. I especially like the game’s pixelated art style. This graphical aspect is what attracted me to Animal Well. I’d be interested to know if pixelated graphics are cherished by younger readers/gamers. I understand the style’s appeal to anyone who’s over 50 because when we were growing up all games by necessity looked like that.Michael Veal GC: That’s not what roguelite means. Rogue is a role-playing game where when you die you lose everything and have to start again from scratch. A roguelike is anything that works in a similar way. A roguelite, which is more common nowadays, is the same but where some minor elements (unlockables, saved resources, etc.) are retained between runs. Appropriately namedWould GameCentral be able to write a review of Forgotlings the prequel to the Forgotton Anne game at the end of year, when there aren’t many games to review? I backed it on Kickstarter and the developer had financial problems in making it and I was hoping a review from you might highlight it to your readers. Eurogamer and Edge magazine did not review it either, which I both follow, so I have also written to Edge magazine to see if they will review it at the end of the year too.Andrew J. GC: We’ll try but we’ve not heard anything from the publisher about it and wouldn’t know the game exists if it wasn’t for you. Don’t call usRegarding a fully open world Super Mario, a few thoughts came to mind, first Sonic Frontiers. Was it one of the best Sonic games of recent times? Yes, but it was very sparse, lots of craggy, mountainous terrain and a grind rail and a loop-the-loop slapped down as a point of interest every so often. Not for my portly little plumber thanks. Second, Mario Kart World, similar to Sonic previously, but a lot less sparse! However, still lots of loooooooong boring roads between areas and not a lot of interest when you go roaming around! Cheers Ninty, but not for the gravity challenged Goomba bothered ta very much! What I think would be amazing would be, large-ish sandbox worlds, like Odyssey and Sunshine before it and even 64 before that, of say Pokey desert, Donut Plains, and Choco Mountain. But, as you leave the area, the game then changes to a Mario & Luigi/Paper Mario style. So the area would change from mountainous to desert and the enemies would change between the areas, battles would become turn-based, possibly with a few different routes to keep it fresh. Perhaps you could even unlock new power suits, aka the frog suit from a 2D beach/lake area, which you could then use to unlock new areas in previous 3D worlds akin to Metroid, so you can collect previously unattainable stars, shines, moons… Or a quick 2D platform level, lovingly created by those Mario masters, much like Super Mario World, perhaps with a mini-boss, like the Koopa kids before you open up the next area! Randomly switching between paper style and world style, so you never know what’s coming, keeping a smile on our faces at all times… Oh Miyamoto-san, I’ll send over my CV.big boy bent Christmas countdownNeed a bit of help, as all EA Sports FC 27 Ultimate Editions have sold out and I’m a bit worried because I want to get my son the Ultimate Edition for Xmas. Will more Ultimate Editions come in stock? I know Xmas is three months away but you gotta think ahead and this year I want all my Xmas gifts done before 1st December, just like last year. I’m guessing only The Duskbloods has a real chance, because there won’t be another general one and there aren’t any other games. I have a strong suspicion that The Duskbloods has been delayed though, as it’s almost October and we still don’t have a release date, despite it supposedly being out this year. I mean when’s it aiming for? New Year’s Eve? My real interest is whether they’ll be at The Game Awards with a new game reveal, but I suppose that’s not normally how they work, so probably not. I will be very interested in the show this year though, because there’s a lot of interesting things that could be shown there, in what will be the first big post-GTA 6 event. At some point we’ve got to hear about FromSoftware’s next game; Capcom hasn’t announced anything big for the future, except Resident Evil Veronica; and, as another reader said recently, it seems like we should be hearing about Final Fantasy 17 pretty soon. As you might guess, I prefer Japanese games, but I’m also interested in seeing what Take-Two will do after GTA. They still haven’t properly announced their new Bioshock game or that rumoured FIFA game. Who knows, Microsoft may even reveal Project Helix, just like they did for Xbox Series X at The Game Awards.Cranston GC: Who knows with Nintendo, but we wouldn’t say it was expected.
