Games Inbox: Is the PS5 the last real console generation?

The last of its kind? (Sony Interactive Entertainment) The Tuesday letters page thinks the PlayStation 6 is going to be irrelevant, as a reader asks about the Zelda: Ocarina Of Time remake music. Games Inbox is a collection of our readers’ letters, comments, and opinions. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.uk The endI dread to think what the PlayStation 6 will actually cost but I already know it’s not something I’m willing to pay. Not unless it secretly transforms into a robot butler as well. I think we have to come to terms with the idea that this is the last real generation of consoles and everything beyond this is just an expensive, and pointless, attempt to fleece hardcore fans. Video game graphics are never going to get better than this until they work in a different way, whether that’s through AI or whatever. There isn’t enough time or money to spend making a game that looks 10% better than the previous gen and which only 10% of people will even notice. Sit any casual gamer in front of a PlayStation 4 and 5 game and they won’t be able to tell which is which. A portable PlayStation 5 makes plenty of sense, but a PlayStation 6 is just the video game console of a Lamborghini – it’s cool that it exists but nobody needs or can afford one.The Colt Mild responseSo by the time you read this, GTA 6 will be less than a month away! Doesn’t seem real, does it? As someone that’s a sort of medium level fan I can’t help wondering how it will be received. There’s been some mild backlash against it in the Inbox lately, in terms of it not seeming to do anything new, but I find it hard to imagine it’ll get any real criticism. Want GTA 6 news? It’s basically been the same game since GTA 3 and nobody has complained, and Rockstar aren’t even pretending it’s some big rethink. I’m fine with that, because I just want to see the graphics and the crowds, and all the different characters. I do worry whether all this nudity business is a controversy waiting to happen though. Americans can get very funny about that sort of thing, much more than violence, but if that’s the risk Rockstar is willing to take I’m interested in see how it works out.Friendo Time well wastedLove that Super Mario 64 secret story and kudos to that fan absolutely wasting his time working it out – it was totally worth it. I can’t stop seeing it as Eternal Star now, which makes sense given the pedestal, so as far as I’m concerned, it’s case closed. Not so sure about the second line but I guess that works too, if you assume they knew that nobody would ever be able to read it; since Super Mario 64 was made in that blissful time when AI didn’t exist. Good stuff, now as an encore, can we have a new 3D Super Mario annoucement, please Nintendo? Super Mario Odyssey will be 10 years old next year.Kaled Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk Saria’s SongOne thing that I’m looking forward to with the Zelda: Ocarina Of Time remake is the orchestrated soundtrack. I don’t recall you mentioning that in your preview, but I was wondering what you think of the changes they made in this regard and how much of the soundtrack is overhauled. Some of Koji Kondo’s best work is on The Legend Of Zelda series. He not only nails the spirit of every game, even the impressionistic compositions for Breath Of The Wild enhance and intensify the overall diegetic effect. But perhaps his greatest achievement, surpassing even those on the Super Mario Galaxy games, is with the ocean section of The Wind Waker. It perfectly captures the spirit of adventure across the open sea. Would you consider doing a feature at some point on the best The Legend of Zelda compositions? I haven’t played some of the entries enough to feel qualified myself to write one.Ciara GC: It’s very hard to concentrate on music at preview events, so all we can say is that it sounded very similar to the originals. Which meant that the Forest Temple was still slightly grating. Biddy Blas saves the galaxyReally glad to see the new Star Wars games doing well, both in terms of being a Star Wars fan and just someone that likes good games. Especially as it’s enabling rare game genres that don’t usually get most promotion. We’re not getting an XCOM 3 but we do have Star Wars Zero Company. No new F-Zero or WipEout but we do have Star Wars: Galactic Racer. So I’d love it if there were more things like that. Star Wars Jedi 3 is next though and if that’s good then we’re looking at the best trilogy since the OT.Besmon Current fashionLoved your preview of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time last week. Quite a lot got shown last week, so I’m now making a conscious effort to stay clear of anymore videos of game footage for it. As it does look beautiful and I would rather enjoy it through my own experiences than watch someone else play it. It’s interesting to me the whole nuts and bolts of Hyrule Castle Town on the original being very different from the rest of the game and also how they have changed it since. The only other area slightly similar was sneaking past the guards in Hyrule Castle, which I’m assuming will probably still be very similar on the new game. It does make me wonder if that was the original idea for the whole game during development and they took a U-turn shortly afterwards? I always liked the original Hyrule Castle Town on the N64 and how the footsteps would get fainter the further Link got away from the set camera angle, it was a nice touch and added depth to the experience. Anyway, I can’t wait until it’s released and I’ve booked the Thursday and Friday off work to play it like the little 49-year-old man child that I am. Hopefully one day I might grow up? Oh the irony, eh?freeway 77 GC: It’s an interesting thought. Resident Evil 2 was out the same year and Final Fantasy 7 the year before, so pre-rendered backdrops were all the rage at the time. Queen’s FieldDiscovered a nifty looking retro-inspired fantasy action role-playing game today called Queen’s Domain. The King’s Field games crossed with Elder Scrolls seem to be mentioned a fair bit when liking it to a style of game. It’s the sort of game that looks like it’d be PC first then maybe console later. But no, it releases on all platforms on October 30th.Simundo GC: For those that aren’t familiar with it, King’s Field is the spiritual predecessor to Demon’s Souls/Dark Souls. Digital side effectMicrosoft have taken a lot of flak recently, and rightly so, but credit where credit is due, their recent Disc to Digital update, which enables you to obtain a digital license for the physical disc you own, is a very welcome feature. When I purchased an Xbox Series X, I kept my old Xbox One X as a retro console in the spare bedroom, for those times when the family have commandeered the living room TV. This meant that for digital games I could play interchangeably between consoles. Obviously, this was still possible with physical discs, but as you had to constantly keep swapping the the disc between the consoles it meant I rarely did. Fast forward to now and thanks to the disc to digital feature I’ve dug out all my old physical games, obtained digital licenses, and now have the benefit of accessing them from my digital library, free to download on either, to play whenever I fancy. Consequently, as a side effect, I now find myself replaying games I’d long since left gathering dust in drawers. I’ve also taken to searching CeX and eBay for cheap physical disc bargains to add to my digital collection. Ironically, what makes this possible is the unique key on each disc, which was introduced for the Xbox One era and was no doubt going to be utilised in some nefarious way for their ill-fated digital rights management solution. Of course, we all know that turned out to be one of those proverbial coffin nails that sealed Xbox’s fate for a whole generation, and arguably beyond. However, I can’t help wonder that If they introduced the disc to digital feature back in the Xbox One era it could have been a real unique selling point for Xbox – the benefits of digital (easy access) combined with all the benefits of physical (second-hand market and physical ownership). Of course, I suspect the reason they didn’t was because they make bucket loads from their digital storefront and didn’t want to risk their profits, which is quite irksome the more I think about. Oh, Microsoft. You were doing so well…Heinz57 Inbox also-ransThe next main Zelda game will be a Dark Souls type affair, I’d bet red rubies on it.Mark Matthews GC: Are you interpreting that as 20p or £20? Is anyone else reminded of Myst when they watch the new Narnia movie trailer? I haven’t read that particular book but I wonder if that’s where some of the ideas came from.Plinny Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk The small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend.
