Games Inbox: Is Marvel’s Wolverine an underrated video game?

Marvel’s Wolverine is selling a lot of consoles (Sony Interactive Entertainment) The Tuesday letters page feels Marvel’s Wolverine has been underrated, as a reader calls for a sequel to Rolo To The Rescue on the Mega Drive. Games Inbox is a collection of our readers’ letters, comments, and opinions. To join in with the discussions yourself email gamecentral@metro.co.uk Casual motivationInteresting to see that it’s Marvel’s Wolverine, just as much as GTA 6, that’s responsible for the uptick in PlayStation 5 console sales. It needs to be constantly said, but ordinary people just don’t care about things like Sony being awful and their all-digital future. And that’s if they’re aware of it, which most aren’t. A bunch of casual gamers just saw a Wolverine game, in his proper costume, and thought, ‘Well, I’m going to need a PlayStation 5 for GTA 6, so might as well get one now for this.’ I think that’s completely reasonable, even if it is a bit of a shock to realise that the sort of things we talk about here on the Inbox just doesn’t register for more casual gamers. Although I will say that, as a fan, I bought Wolverine and I thought it was a perfectly fine game. Not as good as Spider-Man 1 and 2, and a bit repetitive, but I liked the story and use of the characters and I do not regret my purchase. For me it’s in the running for most underrated game of the year. Because that’s at least one award GTA 6 won’t be winning this year.Xane Handheld warInteresting to hear that both Sony and Xbox might be planning new portables for next year, rather than home consoles. You’ve got to wonder who Microsoft thinks is going to pick Xbox over PlayStation but if they haven’t learned by now I don’t think they ever will. Want GTA 6 news? What’s also interesting is that Sony seems to have already reserved the memory it needs for the portable and Xbox will be left out in the cold. I seem to remember that also happened with the Xbox Series X, where companies just trusted and preferred to deal with Sony as the experienced veteran, rather than Microsoft that keeps changing its mind every five minutes. Not that I’m interested in buying either portable, since I already have a PlayStation Portal, but somehow I doubt it’s going to be a battle of equals when they both come out.Eggy Ever increasing pricesI agree with Two Macks; I can’t see the point of next gen hardware, by the time they launch it’s going to be closer to £1,400 and every month after that they will probably be going up more. I’ve had the PlayStation 1, 2, 3, 4, 4 Pro, and 5 and I’m on the PS5 Pro and there is not a cat in hell’s chance of me getting a PlayStation 6 or the PS6 Pro – the main reason is the price. Talking about price, it’s digital only. I’m sorry, have you seen some of the prices on five year old games? Some of them are the same price as when they first came out and £70 for a five year old game is a joke. Sony’s smug attitude has really put me off them and an all-digital future isn’t for me. They can charge whatever they like and if you own the digital-only PlayStation 6 then you will be paying what they say. No, I’ll look online. It’s the store only I think; this is the last gen for me. I’ll take up golf or knitting, I think. I’m not being ripped off no more with bills. I’m not letting Sony join them as well.David Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk Hacked codesSo, I recently found out that someone has found codes in F-Zero GX to unlock the hidden AX (the arcade version) machines and tracks. Given how notoriously difficult the story mode of GX is, needing to clear it on Hard and Very hard to get these unlocks, this is a godsend. This made me wonder, how did they find these codes 23 years after release? Some of them require you to input the codes simultaneously on all four controllers. Was this achieved by data mining or did someone sit there for 23 years trying random button combinations until something worked? Why did it take so long?Sven GC: We would imagine they datamined the code, which would have contained references to what you need to do. That sort of thing was not going on in 2003; not with GameCube games, anyway. EA to the rescueI am shocked that anyone would care about Bubsy Bobcat, but then it has had a lot more sequels than I would’ve thought, especially after Bubsy 3D. I guess it all comes down to what games you had as a kid and just had to make do with, which is probably not a thing that happens so much nowadays. The one I have an unreasonable attachment to is Rolo To The Rescue. In my mind it’s a good game but I don’t want to play it again and find out it’s not, because I’ve never heard anyone talk about in decades. I’m guessing that means it’s not the classic I thought it was. But it was a hell of a lot better than Bubsy 3D so I’m not sure why it didn’t get any sequels.Burnside GC: Developer Vectordean only lasted four years, so they didn’t really get a chance. EA published the game, so they probably still own the rights. One in a millionI think fans are going to have to realise that saving Mass Effect has no more chance of happening than Sony going back to using discs. It’s over, the execs have made their choice and as usual the choice is to not spend money and to lay off as many people as possible. I’m willing to bet that the Amazon TV show will never happen but even if it does that probably won’t make much difference. EA made their money selling the rights to the show, that doesn’t mean making a game is going to suddenly be any more easy or profitable. The only glimmer of hope I can see is if the show happens after Star Wars: Fate Of The Old Republic comes out and then that developer could be someone that EA taps to make a new Mass Effect, because it’s run by the director of the original games. If the show and them becoming free line-up then maybe you could get one of those lucky coincidences, but that’s such a longshot I don’t know if it was even worth me typing it. The much more likely reality is that Dragon Age and Mass Effect are dead forever. The only exceptions being when EA decide to make mobile games for them, that everyone hates, and in 35 years when the rights revert to whoever can still claim them. So, basically, that’s the end of the BioWare story. A sad business and while I don’t put all the blame on EA, most of it is still their fault in the end.Carlton A dream to some…I haven’t thought about Knightmare since I was a kid in the 90s. What a bizarre thing to bring back after all this time, especially for a free no-budget game. But, heck, I’m interested. I was definitely interested to learn that people had actually beaten the game. I don’t remember ever seeing anyone do it. They all seemed to die after a couple of screens, so the Dark Souls comparisons are definitely valid. The whole vibe was very dark gothic though. You know, for a kid’s show on in the afternoon.Cornwall Don't miss Gaming news! Add us as a Preferred Source GameCentral has been delivering unique games news and reviews for over a decade Final LegendI’ve enjoyed the talk about what Nintendo could be planning for the next mainline Zelda and while there’s no way to know, I do think a move into action role-playing would be interesting and a logical offshoot of the original formula. I’m excited to see what they do but I hope after Ocarina Of Time and the inevitable Majora’s Mask remake that they just stop there. I really don’t see any point in remaking the 2D games in that ugly art style they’ve been using since Link’s Awakening, and the games don’t need it anyway. As a Game Boy game you can see the point in remaking it, but the SNES game still looks great. What I would be perfectly happy with though is a sequel to Majora’s Mask, or rather a third entry in the Ocarina Of Time trilogy. We must know what happened to Navi and I’d like to see something that avoids the sad fate of that Link in Twilight Princess. It seems to me there’s definitely a chapter of the story missing and they could treat it as a spin-off by reusing the graphics from the Ocarina Of Time remake, much like Majora’s Mask itself was made at the time. Of course, they could just make the next mainline game the endgame for the trilogy, but I don’t think they’d do that sort of fan service for a game that’s presumably going to be another soft reboot for the series.Limpton Inbox also-ransI seriously cannot believe how long Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is. I know you said it was big but, just… why? I’m not complaining I just don’t know how the devs got it all done and still had time to sleep.Sparky Just beaten Resident Evil Requiem and now I understand why everyone was complaining about the final boss, what a complete anticlimax. The motorbike chase was amazing though.Rattin Email your comments to: gamecentral@metro.co.uk The small printNew Inbox updates appear every weekday morning, with special Hot Topic Inboxes at the weekend.
