One of Game of Thrones' most beloved stars leads a spy thriller series whose future is bleak, but deserves to turn it around and return for season 2. Game of Thrones' cast was one of the best elements of the hit HBO fantasy series. Even when the show faltered in its final couple of seasons, Game of Thrones' actors still delivered top-notch performances. Since Game of Thrones ended in 2019, many of its actors have gone on to star in other high-profile projects. For instance, quite a few of them ended up joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe's slate of releases. Jon Snow star Kit Harington and Robb Stark actor Richard Madden starred together in Eternals, while Daenerys Targaryen actress Emilia Clark popped up in Secret Invasion, an MCU TV show on Disney+. Speaking about streaming, one of the biggest genres to find success in the medium in recent years has been that of spy thrillers. Shows like Michael Fassbender's The Agency on Paramount+, Netflix's The Night Agent, Gary Oldman's Slow Horses on Apple TV, and more have become hits. Madden himself has starred in two seasons of the ambitious Prime Video spy thriller series Citadel. That said, it is another Game of Thrones star, Clarke, who deserves to see her spy thriller series return for season 2. The TV show in question is Ponies, which debuted on Peacock on January 15, with all of its eight episodes being released on the same day on the streaming service as a binge release. Ponies deserves to return for season 2 for a few reasons. Ponies Is A Unique Spy Thriller Series Amid A Crowded Genre Market Sadly, a few months after it debuted, Ponies was canceled by Peacock in June. The cancellation was shocking, as the show not only starred Clarke, who became a global fan-favorite as Daenerys in Game of Thrones, but also played with a genre that is dominating streaming charts left and right, and was even universally beloved. Ponies stands at a near-perfect 94% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 33 reviews. The Cold War spy thriller series also holds a high 83% audience score. With so many dark spy shows right now, like The Agency, Slow Horses, and Black Doves, Ponies offered something different. Sure, Ponies season 1 presented its dark moments, such as the plot device that turned Clarke's Bea and Haley Lu Richardson's Twila into CIA operatives, which was the seeming assassination of the secretaries' husbands, who were real spies. That said, Ponies became such a well-regarded show due to how it used comedy in moments with high stakes and the actress' impeccable timing. These are two characters who are completely out of their depth and learning on the way, and they are just hilarious together. Ponies' mix of a Cold War espionage thriller with a buddy comedy makes it a unique and worthwhile genre entry. How Ponies Season 2 Could Work Ponies season 1 ended by both addressing season-long mysteries, as well as setting up a future that has, at the very least for now, been scrapped. If the Peacock spy thriller series were to come back for more, then Ponies season 2 would need to explore the reveal that Bea’s husband, Chris (Louis Boyer) is both alive in Belorussiaand working for the KGB. The show could delve into why he became a mole and how Bea deals with the reveal and the feeling of betrayal that must come from it. That would have to happen after a hypothetical Ponies season 2 resolved Bea's own cliffhanger at the end of season 1. Clarke's character and Richardson's Twila ended the series with KGB agents having guns to their heads. Will they survive? Most likely, but how that happens will remain a mystery, unless Peacock reverses Ponies' cancellation or the spy thriller series finds a home somewhere else.
