‘Game of Thrones’ Finally Hitting Big Screen in 2029 With Warner Bros.’ ‘Aegon’s Conquest’

Warner Bros. announced Tuesday that Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest is set for theatrical release on June 1, 2029. Owen Harris directs the film that has a script from Beau Willimon, marking the first feature film for the franchise that adapts author George R.R. Martin‘s A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy book series. The studio confirmed the title at CinemaCon earlier this year for the movie that centers on King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. Castmembers have not yet been revealed. A Game of Thrones movie has been discussed for more than a decade, with talk dating back to 2013, two years after the series adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire first premiered on HBO. Back then, Game of Thrones series co-creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss pitched network brass on the wildly popular program potentially ending with three feature films. The flagship series aired its finale in May 2019. HBO has two current Game of Thrones series, with House of the Dragon having aired its third season over the summer, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season two is expected next year. Harris has directed episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, with his other television credits including Mrs. Davis and Black Mirror. Willimon created House of Cards and served as a writer on the Star Wars series Andor. Back in 2015, Martin explained why he had previously turned down opportunities for a Game of Thrones film, given that he didn’t want to have to cut out significant portions of his books. He was also concerned that a movie would mostly focus on a character like Jon Snow or Daenerys Targaryen. “I didn’t need the money, so I had the power to say the sexiest word in Hollywood: ‘no,'” he told The South Bank Show at the time.
