Sign in to your ScreenRant account Game of Thrones' final showdown between the Night King and Jon Snow still lingers in fans' hearts as one of the biggest missed opportunities in television history, where HBO's show-runners dropped the ball by denying viewers a proper duel after years of buildup. Seeing as the Night King was literally played by a veteran stuntman and expert swordsman/fight choreographer, Vladimir Furdi, the choice to not even have the two characters clash blades once during the Battle of Winterfell still irks fans to this day. The point was driven home once more as the cinematic trailer for War for Westeros depicted the final showdown in an alternate reality where they actually decided to fight, instantly becoming one of the most-watched Game of Thrones trailers in years. And now, thanks to the upcoming launch of Beyond the Wall, fans will get another chance to face off against the Night King north of the wall once again (via GoTL). Game of Thrones has recently announced a major update for Legends that will introduce a brand-new faction called Beyond the Wall, reorganizing the previously titled Free Folk faction into a new category as part of a larger overhaul to factions in the game. The new Beyond the Wall faction will be focused primarily on the Reinforce mechanic, which allows players to "Swarm the battle with additional champions and crush your foes." Legends' new faction structure is designed to make gameplay more viable and rethink how the game incentivizes players using its various Champions. For the Beyond the Wall faction specifically, Legendary Champions include the following iconic characters and dragons from Game of Thrones: Bran Stark Ice Warden The Night King Icy Viserion Notably, Zynga describes the Ice Warden as "a lieutenant of the White Walker army" who leads a horde of wights south into the Seven Kingdoms. He was introduced in December 2024 as a Legendary White Walker Champion, alongside Craster, but is not an actual character from Game of Thrones and is uniquely designed as a Champion for Legends. The new faction update is one of Legends largest roster shakeups yet, expected to go live in late September 2026. The overhaul is designed to address several long-running problems with the current system, including shallow rosters for certain factions, a lack of recognizable "star power," and Champions who currently belong to no faction at all. Zynga says data shows players are considerably more likely to summon and use recognizable characters and faction-aligned Champions, while smaller groups have become increasingly difficult to support. The update will broaden several existing factions, introduce the new Sun’s Dominion, and ensure every Champion ultimately belongs somewhere without removing anyone from their existing faction. It will also add considerably more dual-faction Legendary Champions, rebalance faction bonuses, and introduce new stats including Gem Resistance, Crit Resistance, and Resilience, giving players more flexibility when building their teams. It's an exciting overhaul that longtime Game of Thrones: Legends players are certainly looking forward to later this month.
