Gal Gadot’s New 84-Minute Prime Video Thriller Officially Sets All-Time Rotten Tomatoes Record

Gal Gadot can't catch a breather in The Runner's Rotten Tomatoes debut. Led by the former Wonder Woman star, the new Prime Video thriller centers on Maia Mitchell, a high-profile attorney in London on the verge of closing a major trial involving a ruthless crime lord. However, when Maia's son, who has to live on a diabetic monitor, is kidnapped by a caller who gives her a series of cryptic commands, she must race across the city in hopes of getting to her son before his medicine is needed. As the film makes its September 2 premiere on Prime Video, reviews have begun rolling out for The Runner, securing it a score on Rotten Tomatoes. With 15 reviews calculated at the time of writing, the real-time action-thriller has clocked in with a 7% approval rating from critics on the review aggregate, officially setting a record for the lowest-scored movie for Gadot on the platform. Gadot's journey through the Hollywood ranks has certainly been an interesting one since making her film debut with 2009's Fast & Furious. She carried on her role of Gisele through the franchise's next two sequels, which scored solid reviews from critics, though subsequently saw a fluctuation in the opposite direction with the ensemble crime thriller Triple 9, Kevin Costner-led Criminal and suburban action-comedy Keeping Up with the Joneses. Though the latter era also gave Gadot her career-defining role with Diana Prince, a.k.a. Wonder Woman, in the Zack Snyder-developed DC Extended Universe, it still proved a rockier time as the majority of her appearances were in critically panned titles. To date, her first solo Wonder Woman movie remains her highest-scoring film of all-time on Rotten Tomatoes with its impressive 93% "Certified Fresh" rating, a feat that wasn't recaptured with its 2020 sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, which landed a "Rotten" score of 57%. More notably, though, in her time since exiting the DCEU as James Gunn got to work on his DC Universe relaunch, Gadot has had an unfortunate run with critics on Rotten Tomatoes. As the above chart shows, audiences are generally more favorable in their reactions to her movies, even the live-action Snow White remake for Disney, which had sparked a considerable amount of controversy before its release, and went on to become an infamous $205.7 million box office bomb, reportedly losing the studio up to $170 million. Moreover, many of Gadot's films still find themselves becoming viewership smashes for their respective platforms, regardless of their reviews. Netflix's Heart of Stone became one of the streamer's most-watched films of 2023 with nearly 110 million views secured after nine months, while Snow White redeemed itself both on digital platforms and Disney+ after its theatrical failing. As such, The Runner could very well race past critics' harsh reviews to become a smash hit for Prime Video in the coming weeks.
