A report from Charlie Taylor, the Chief Inspector of Prisons, praised the jail – the most violent in the UK – for rewarding well-behaved cons and encouraging ‘positive behaviour’. He said: “Well-behaved prisoners had access to some benefits, such as bigger televisions and additional association time.” He added that inmates on the basic level of privileges struggled to progress, adding: “There was limited support to help prisoners on the lowest level of the scheme to progress.” The report also revealed the staggering level of violence at the jail, with 527 assaults in the most recent 12-month period. Mr Taylor said: “Levels of violence were very high.
