Full list of 115 dog breeds that could ‘disappear’ in UK from border collies to greyhounds – is your pup on the list?

SOME breeds best loved by Brits have quietly fallen out of favour, with around 115 breeds set to “disappear” from the UK. But is your pup now considered rare in the country? The Pyrenean Sheepdog (Long Haired) is the breed that has fallen the most in popularity in the UK Credit: Klaus Feurich Owning a Dalmatian, Poodle or Border Collie was once considered the height of fashion, with the distinctive dogs spotted everywhere on Britain’s streets. But now, more than two decades later, these once-trendy breeds have quietly disappeared from UK homes. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! But why is this the case? Research by Pets4Homes found that designer mixes, such as Cockapoos, Labradoodles, and Pugapoos (a pug and poodle mix), now make up around 35 per cent of all puppies sold in the UK. As busy lifestyles and smaller homes become more commonplace, Brits have favoured the pups for their affectionate nature, hypoallergenic coat, and most importantly, adaptable size. As a result, high-energy pedigrees, such as Dalmatians and Greyhounds, have fallen dramatically in terms of popularity. The number of Greyhounds fell by around 16 per cent between 2010 and 2021 according to data from The Kennel Club, while Border Collies declined in popularity by almost three per cent. In an analysis of more than 11million dog registrations, the organisation revealed the number of pedigree pups in Britain have steadily dropped since 1990, falling around 0.9 per cent every year. With this in mind, veterinarian Iryna Smyrnova told the Daily Mail that it’s important owners select their pet based on their lifestyle needs. Iryna said: “Ultimately, my recommendation has been to select a dog for your home based on that dog‘s personality, care requirements, and ability to thrive in your environment/lifestyle, as opposed to selecting one simply because of how popular it is.” You can check out the full list of dog breeds that could “disappear” below: Dog breeds that could ‘disappear’ in the UK from highest to lowest population numbers: Welsh Terrier Retriever (Flat Coated) Maltese Pyrenean Mountain Dog Giant Schnauzer Miniature Schnauzer Fox Terrier (smooth) Great Swiss Mountain Dog Weimaraner Italian Spinone Dalmatian Samoyed Gordon Setter Tibetan Spaniel Pointer Dandie Dinmont terrier Australian Cattle Dog Spaniel (English Springer) Miniature Pinscher Norfolk Terrier Keeshond Fox Terrier (Wire) Otterhound English Setter Irish Setter Beagle Bernese Mountain Dog Staffordshire Bull Terrier Basset Fauve de Bretagne English Toy Terrier (Black & Tan) German Shepherd Dog Bull Terrier Basset Griffon Vendeen (Petit) Retriever (Curly Coated) Neapolitan Mastiff Borzoi Border Collie Tibetan Terrier Swedish Vallhund Deerhound Boxer Schnauzer Parson Russell Terrier Bedlington Terrier Great Dane Spaniel (Welsh Springer) Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer Spaniel (Irish Water) Irish Wolfhound Retriever (Chesapeake Bay) Scottish Terrier Briard Portuguese Podengo Spaniel (American Cocker) Large Munsterlander Kerry Blue Terrier Border terrier Eurasier Leonberger Mastiff Old English Sheepdog Belgian Shepherd Dog (Groenendael) Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier German Spitz (Mittel) Spaniel (Sussex) Brittany Norwegian Buhund Saluki Norwich Terrier Afghan Hound Newfoundland Lakeland Terrier Hungarian Puli Bloodhound Collie (Rough) Basset Hound Shetland Sheepdog Bearded Collie Dogue de Bordeaux Bolognese Lowchen (Little Lion Dog) Irish Red & White Setter Xoloitzcuintle Int Polish Lowland Sheepdog Finnish Spitz Chihuahua (Smooth Coat) Australian Silky Terrier Japanese Chin Papillon Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Basset Griffon Vendeen (Grand) Pekingese Russian Black Terrier Shar Pei Shih Tzu German Spitz (Klein) Bullmastiff Bouvier Des Flandres Belgian Shepherd Dog (Tervueren) Chihuahua (Long Coat) Schipperke Cairn terrier King Charles Spaniel Chinese Crested West Highland White Terrier German Longhaired Pointer Lhasa Apso Estrela Mountain Dog Alaskan Malamute Siberian Husky Bichon Frise Yorkshire Terrier Greyhound Akita Pyrenean Sheepdog (Long Haired) Comment now
