From Sye to Gaayapadda Simham: How actor Pradeep Rawat's career came full circle

Actor Pradeep Rawat, best known for playing memorable villains across Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and several other film industries, died on August 4 at the age of 74 after a relapse of cancer. While he had built a career in Hindi cinema over the decades, it was SS Rajamouli's 2004 Telugu blockbuster Sye that transformed him into one of South Indian cinema's most sought-after screen antagonists. Interestingly, his final on-screen appearance this year served as a fitting tribute to the role that redefined his career.Before becoming a familiar face in South Indian cinema, Rawat had already made a mark in Hindi television and films. He became a household name after portraying Ashwatthama in BR Chopra's iconic television series Mahabharat. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he appeared in several Hindi films, often playing negative characters.However, his career took a decisive turn with Rajamouli's Sye, starring Nithiin and Genelia D'Souza. Rawat's portrayal of Bikshu Yadav, the ruthless gangster with a distinctive septum ring, became one of the most iconic villain performances in the history of Telugu cinema. His intimidating screen presence and distinctive look made the character instantly iconic. Rawat went on to feature in several major films, including Prabhas' Chhatrapati, Chiranjeevi's Stalin and Allu Arjun's Desamuduru. Around the same period, he also appeared in Suriya's Tamil blockbuster Ghajini, which further expanded his popularity across South industries.Although Rawat remained synonymous with powerful antagonist roles, his characters gradually evolved over the years. That journey came full circle in his final Telugu film, Gaayapadda Simham, directed by Kasyap Sreenivas and released in May this year.Starring Tharun Bhascker and Faria Abdullah, the film appeared to pay homage to Rawat's breakthrough Telugu role by naming his character Bikshu Das, in contrast to Sye's Bikshu Yadav. While the character no longer sported Bikshu Yadav's trademark septum ring, he retained a similar traditional look with a vest, dhoti and jewellery, creating a visual callback to Sye. A practitioner of black magic, the character also provided comic relief and was portrayed as a caring father who wanted his son, Bhairav Das, played by Sree Vishnu, to carry forward the family's legacy with pride. The role reflected how Rawat's on-screen persona had evolved from a fearsome villain to a character with emotional depth and warmth.Rawat's work extended across multiple film industries until his final years. In Hindi, he was last seen in the 2025 historical drama Chhaava, alongside Vicky Kaushal, Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna. His final Tamil release was DD Returns (2023), while Champion (2022) marked his last Kannada film. His final Malayalam appearance came in Oru Kadathu Naadan Kadha (2019).Pradeep Rawat's business manager, Siddharth Tiwari, confirmed the news of his death to India Today. He said the actor had recovered from cancer earlier, but it relapsed a few months ago. Tiwari said Rawat had been in hospital for the last couple of months and that his condition worsened over the past few days before he died on Tuesday evening. He is survived by his wife, Kalyani, and son, Vikramaditya.
