From Streets to Polling Stations: Serbia’s Student Movement Takes Electoral Test

When Serbia’s students began blockading their universities after the fatal collapse of the canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad in November 2024, entering parliament was not part of the plan. Their demands were directed at Serbia’s institutions: publication of documentation relating to the station reconstruction, prosecution of those accused of attacking students commemorating the victims, the dropping of charges against arrested students, and increased funding for higher education. “At that point, we did not even know what the electoral process involved. We simply wanted justice,” said Milica Najdanovic, a student at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Five months of university blockades and mass protests changed the calculation.
