I didn't have a tidy answer. But I remember thinking: that question, asked by a child who wasn't sure it was worth pursuing, is exactly the question ISRO's scientists must have wrestled with too long before they had proof it was worth it, only a conviction that it might be.On August 23, 2023, that conviction became history. Chandrayaan-3 became the first spacecraft ever to land near the Moon's south pole, a region no other country, despite decades of lunar missions, had managed to reach. It was celebrated as a triumph of engineering. But underneath technology is a story every child can relate to: an idea that began as a possibility and grew, slowly, through learning, failure and belief.That's the story worth bringing into classrooms not on Space Day alone, but every day after.EVERY BREAKTHROUGH STARTS AS A QUESTIONLong before children chase ambitious goals, they build the habit of wondering. Why is the sky blue? How do planes stay up? What would happen if humans lived on Mars? These questions may sound simple, but they reveal something important: the desire to understand. Our job as educators isn't to rush children toward answers. It's to keep that wonder alive.For one child, a fascination with spacecraft might grow into a love of physics. For another, curiosity about stars might become a passion for astronomy. The dream itself may shift along the way — what matters is that it gives direction to curiosity. WHAT FAILURE ACTUALLY TEACHESChandrayaan-2, in 2019, didn't achieve its planned soft landing. That moment could have ended India's lunar ambitions. Instead, it became data, a chance to study what went wrong and return, four years later, with Chandrayaan-3.Children live smaller versions of this constantly. The drawing doesn't turn out right. An experiment fails. A sum takes five attempts instead of one. Told as a story rather than a lesson, Chandrayaan-2 teaches something most textbooks don't: not landing the first time can be part of learning how to land eventually. Failure doesn't close the door to a dream, sometimes it's the only way to open it properly the next time.EXPOSURE WIDENS WHAT A CHILD CAN IMAGINE Children who encounter only a narrow range of ideas develop a narrow sense of what they could become. This is where schools carry real responsibility, not to describe distant possibilities, but to make them tangible.A telescope turns an abstract lesson about planets into an experience. A model rover invites questions about how things move. A conversation with someone who has actually done the thing makes a far-off career feel within reach. This is the thinking behind our Space Lab at Satya School, where even our youngest students build rocket and rover models, trace constellations and lunar phases through simulations, and look through telescopes at the night sky.Some have had the chance to speak directly with an astronaut who has lived and worked in space a conversation no textbook can replicate. The goal was never to teach children about space. It was to let them experience the pull of a real question and watch where it leads.Sometimes the shift needed is as small as the question we ask. Instead of "What do you want to be?" which can feel distant and abstract to a young child, we might sometimes ask, "What do you want to try?" The second question leaves room for discovery without demanding a decision. It makes space for an attempt that doesn't work the first time to still count as a real attempt. It teaches children to treat learning as exploration, not a commitment to a predetermined destination.THE TEACHER WHO TAKES THE DREAM SERIOUSLYFor many children, a teacher is the first person outside their family to hear a big ambition and take it seriously. When a child says they want to be an astronaut, or study oceans, or solve climate change, the instinctive adult response is often to explain how hard that will be. A better first response is a question: What makes you want to do that?Taking a child's dream seriously doesn't mean promising it will come true. It means giving them room to explore it, to understand what it demands, and to discover whether it still excites them once they know. A good teacher helps a child move from "I want to do this" to "What do I need to learn to do this?" That shift from wish to plan is where dreams start to become buildable.DREAMS NEED A BRIDGE TO ACTIONReaching the Moon took more than imagination. It took research, testing, failure, correction, and years of persistence. Children need to live that same cycle in miniature: a big idea leads to a question, a question leads to investigation, investigation leads to an experiment, and an experiment that fails leads to another attempt. This is how children come to understand that progress rarely moves in a straight line and that this is normal, not a sign something has gone wrong.Schools that build room for this space to build, test, question, revise, and try again aren't just teaching a subject. They're building the discipline to pursue a possibility that matters.FROM THE MOON, BACK TO THE CLASSROOMSome of the children who will shape the next era of space exploration, climate science, and fields that don't exist yet are sitting in classrooms right now. They don't yet know what they'll become. Many don't even know some of these careers exist.What they need first is exposure. They need adults who take their questions seriously, and experiences that make distant possibilities feel close enough to reach for.So, this Space Day, perhaps the most meaningful thing we can do is not simply tell children about Chandrayaan-3, but give them the space to ask their own questions, build something, get it wrong, try again and discover where their curiosity takes them.Because every great mission begins somewhere.
