Published Oct 9, 2026, 4:56 PM EDT Growing up around performers, storytelling was always central to Emma's life. Add in a nerdy older brother who introduced her to Marvel at far too young an age, and her love for entertainment led her to pursue a Journalism degree at Indiana University, where she discovered her passion for entertainment reporting. She spent nearly one year in Los Angeles covering industry stories and fully immersing herself in the world of entertainment media. Crystal Lake will feature a major kill that could completely change Friday the 13th. The upcoming Peacock series serves as a prequel to the long-running Friday the 13th franchise, with Linda Cardellini starring as Pamela Voorhees. Set in 1971, Crystal Lake follows Pamela while she works as a cook at Camp Crystal Lake and brings her young son, Jason (Callum Vinson), with her. The eight-episode series will explore her story before the events of the original Friday the 13th. During the Crystal Lake panel at NYCC, which ScreenRant's Jordan Williams attended, Gwendolyn Sundstrom teased that one kill in particular will "switch everything you THINK you know about Friday the 13th." While she stopped short of revealing which character is involved or exactly how the death changes the audience's understanding of the franchise, her tease suggests the series has some major surprises planned. Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane also said viewers should look out for Easter eggs that directly recreate moments from the movies. Crystal Lake features shot-for-shot recreations of familiar scenes, but places them in new contexts that could similarly challenge what viewers believe they already know. That doesn't necessarily mean the series will rewrite the established Friday the 13th canon. Instead, the prequel format gives Crystal Lake a chance to add context to recognized events. That potential is already apparent in first reactions to Crystal Lake, which found that the first two episodes offer new insights into Pamela and Jason Voorhees' origins that could change how audiences view the original movies. Higheror Lower? Choose the movie with the higher Rotten Tomatoes score. Recontextualizing the franchise isn't the only way Crystal Lake plans to distinguish itself from the movies. During the NYCC panel, Kane also addressed the "must-have kills" that come with making a Friday the 13th project. He explained that while the series would spend multiple episodes exploring Pamela's psychology, viewers would still expect plenty of creative kills. The showrunner believes the resulting deaths are "even more brutal than the movies," but his reasoning goes beyond how violent they are. According to Kane, the kills hit considerably harder because Crystal Lake can explore its characters in greater depth before they die. That's an advantage the television format naturally provides, as the series has more time to invest in characters who might have received far less development in a feature-length slasher movie. That could also help distinguish Crystal Lake as more than a straightforward origin story for Pamela and Jason Voorhees, while still delivering what audiences expect from Friday the 13th. The best and most memorable Friday the 13th kills remain a major part of the franchise, but Kane's comments indicate the people on the receiving end of Crystal Lake's kills will matter just as much. All eight episodes of Crystal Lake premiere on Peacock on October 15.
