Freddy the German soccer fan is finally coming to Kentucky

It’s been over five weeks since I first wrote about Freddy, the German soccer fan who came to America with his friends for the ultimate World Cup road trip and became a social media star. That trip is about to come to an end, but not without a stop in the Bluegrass State. Freddy and his friends are in Nashville today, where last night they attended the Grand Ole Opry and wore the boots Ella Langley gave them in Oklahoma out on Broadway. It must have been a heck of a night, because they stayed in the hotel room until 1 p.m., finally grabbing breakfast and hitting the streets again to enjoy the sweaty, sudsy chaos. There is only so much Nashville one can endure these days, so no wonder they’re headed north tomorrow for Kentucky. Hello America🇺🇸Can’t lie we were a bit exhausted from the last days and just chilled in the hotel until 1pm and watched TV. Now we got our breakfast and will start exploring again. We decided to stay one more day in Nashville and will head to Kentucky tomorrow😁 pic.twitter.com/TkFcVZ56pI— Freddy🇩🇪 (@FreddyLA7) July 17, 2026 A quick refresher on Freddy. You probably remember his first viral tweets about Waffle House and the MARTA in Atlanta, where he and his friends first touched down on June 5. His candid takes on American culture cracked the Twitter algorithm, helping him amass hundreds of thousands of followers. He became so famous that JJ Watt invited him to Houston and became his de facto agent, sifting through his endorsement offers from companies eager to latch onto his growing popularity. To his credit, Freddy turned almost all of those down. He and his friends did take country star Ella Langley, whose songs they’d learned by heart after listening to local radio, up on the offer to come to her concert in Oklahoma City, where she hooked them up with tickets and a hotel room full of swag. The Ella Fellas quickly learned that fame can sometimes come with a price, especially online. People continued to speculate that Freddy wasn’t real, just someone using a fictional persona to cash in on Twitter monetization and/or endorsements. With over 750,000 followers, the toxicity got so bad that he shut down his Twitter account for a few weeks, but on Monday, he started it back up to document the final stretch of their road trip, which made its way back to the South. Clemson, South Carolina, to be specific. Hello again. We’re currently in Clemson, South Carolina. I’ve decided to come back here to document the final part of our road trip. The main reason I deactivated my account two weeks ago was that things became increasingly toxic. For some people, it’s unfortunately… pic.twitter.com/Ep2FSRA3oB— Freddy🇩🇪 (@FreddyLA7) July 13, 2026 From there, the group went to the mountains, checking out Cherokee, North Carolina, before following the Ocoee River through Eastern Tennessee. They met some new friends there, hanging out on a ranch and spending a day on Lake Ocoee before continuing to Nashville. Tennessee❤️When people told us at the beginning of our road trip that people in the South are different, we didn’t really know what they meant. But after spending several weeks here, we finally understand. The hospitality here is just something else. Everyone knows everyone,… pic.twitter.com/teTwFqAIR0— Freddy🇩🇪 (@FreddyLA7) July 15, 2026 Now, Freddy is finally coming to the Bluegrass State. He seems pretty good at finding fun, but a few suggestions in case he’s reading: Mammoth Cave: It’s going to be hot this weekend. What better place to cool off than Mammoth Cave, the largest known cave system on Earth? With 426 miles of explored passageways, Mammoth Cave National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s also an easy detour off I-65, which would allow them to visit the real main attraction: Dinosaur World. We’re totally getting a Freddy picture of that, right? The University of Kentucky: Even if Freddy prefers futbol to football, he loves a sports venue, checking out both Death Valleys (Clemson and LSU), the Houston Rockets’ and New Orleans Saints’ facilities, and the venues where Germany played its matches. The folks at UK Athletics would be silly not to invite him to tour Kroger Field, Rupp Arena, and/or Historic Memorial Coliseum. Give him a front-row seat to La Familia vs. The Ville in TBT tomorrow so he can learn about one of the most intense rivalries in sports. The Bundesliga’s got nothing on UK vs. UofL. Churchill Downs: Another obvious one, although Nick Roush isn’t in town to be his tour guide. Keeneland is another great option. The Bourbon Trail: Before heading home, Freddy and his pals must educate themselves on America’s native spirit, bourbon. Doing the entire bourbon trail feels like a bit much, but they have to check out at least one distillery. Buffalo Trace is always a crowd pleaser. Lake Cumberland: We know Freddy likes lakes. There are few better than Lake Cumberland. Maybe they can finally reveal what is on Bob in Jamestown’s porch. If he doesn’t want to drive that far, he can just come across the state line and hang out with us on Barren River Lake. KFC Museum in Corbin: Most Europeans’ first introduction to Kentucky is Kentucky Fried Chicken, one of the most popular fast food chains on the planet. Freddy could go back to where it all began, the Harland Sanders Café and Museum in Corbin. Red River Gorge: Freddy and his friends spent time in the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia. They can check out another stretch of Appalachia at Red River Gorge, which has become an increasingly popular hiking and camping destination in recent years. A trip to the Gorge isn’t complete without a stop at Miguel’s for pizza. The Kentucky Castle: Sure, there are plenty of castles in Germany (over 20,000 apparently), but has Freddy seen the one off Versailles Road just outside Lexington? She’s a beaut. KSBar and Grille: Yes, the bar is closed to full-time service and will only continue as a gameday pop-up with Walk-Ons, which is taking over the Tilted Kilt space next door; however, for Freddy, we’ll make an exception, even if Drew Franklin and Ryan Lemond have to open it up for Sunday’s World Cup final. Wherever Freddy goes, we’ll pass along his adventures. Cheers to a beautiful weekend in the Commonwealth.
