Gomes has featured regularly during Marseille’s pre-season preparations and was deployed in his preferred No10 role during Wednesday’s 3-0 friendly win over Al Shahania. But despite being involved in Bruno Genesio’s plans, the midfielder’s priority is understood to be a return to England. Gomes came through Manchester United‘s academy and made his senior debut for the club as a teenager. He eventually left Old Trafford in 2020 to join Lille, where he established himself as an important player before moving to Marseille on a free transfer last summer. The midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at Wolves but his time at Molineux proved difficult. That has not dampened his desire to make another attempt at establishing himself in the Premier League. Lampard’s side secured promotion to the top flight this summer and are preparing for their return to the Premier League. A move to the Sky Blues would give Gomes the chance to play regular top-flight football and rebuild his reputation in England. Marseille, meanwhile, are willing to listen to offers. Gomes joined the French club on a free transfer in the summer of 2025 and is understood to be among their higher earners.
