Fox's 17-Year-Old Comedy Series Officially Getting Revival

This article covers a developing story. Continue to check back with us as we will be adding more information as it becomes available.Don't stop believin', because Glee will be returning to the halls of McKinley High. The smash-hit Fox comedy, which follows the adventures of a high school glee club in Lima, Ohio, was co-created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan. The show featured an ensemble cast of colorful characters dealing with ripped-from-the-headlines teen issues while performing multiple musical numbers an episode. During Glee's six seasons, which ran between 2009 and 2015, 207 songs from the show appeared on the Billboard Hot 100, breaking Elvis Presley's record for the most songs on the chart. The official Glee X account has announced that Glee is returning via a post with the caption "currently gleeking out." The official announcement image, which can be seen below, features the iconic logo with a hand forming an L, bearing the slogan "it's official... Glee is returning." TVLine reports that the show has officially gotten a series order at Hulu and Disney+, though there is no premiere date or casting information available at the time of writing. This news comes in the wake of multiple comments from co-creator Ryan Murphy about being interested in mounting a revival. Most recently, in late September, he told Entertainment Tonight that he had "just finished" a script for the reboot. He added that "Brad, Ian, and I, who wrote all the first two seasons, have written something. I’ve been in touch with around 10 of the original cast members. It’s very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea.” It is currently unknown who those 10 cast members were and if any of them will ultimately agree to reprise their original roles. However, there are a number of Glee cast members who have died since the show's pilot aired in 2009. Cory Monteith (who played goofball jock Finn Hudson) died at age 31 in 2013, shortly before the premiere of season 5. After the show ended, Mark Salling (who played edgy football player Noah Puckerman) died in 2018 at age 35 and Naya Rivera (who played sharp-tongued cheerleader Santana Lopez) died in 2020 at age 33. Characters who could theoretically appear in a reboot include former McKinley High students Rachel Berry (Lea Michele), Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), Mercedes Jones (Amber Riley), Quinn Fabray (Dianna Agron), Artie Abrams (Kevin McHale), Tina Cohen-Chang (Jenna Ushkowitz), Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris), Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss), Mike Chang (Harry Shum Jr.), and Sam Evans (Chord Overstreet), as well as staff members Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison), Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch), and Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays). Ushkowitz and McHale have already proven their interest in re-exploring the universe of the show by co-hosting the rewatch podcast And That's What You REALLY Missed, which premiered in 2022. Given that Glee is a high school series, it seems highly likely that a new ensemble of young actors will take center stage in the reboot, with legacy characters serving either as staff members or advisors. This is similar to the structure the show took on in season 4, when many of the main characters left for college and new characters, including Jake Puckerman (Jacob Artist), Marley Rose (Melissa Benoist), Ryder Lynn (Blake Jenner), and Kitty Wilde (Becca Tobin), took over the high school storylines.
