In the current streaming landscape, it's hard to think of a bigger medical drama than The Pitt, but perhaps its biggest competition is a six-season Fox series that's about to leave Netflix. Premiering on HBO Max in 2025, ER's Noah Wyle re-dons his scrubs to lead the cast of The Pitt as Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, a senior attending physician at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. The Pitt has aired two seasons to date, each set in real time over a 15-hour emergency room shift. Not only has the medical drama earned back-to-back Primetime Emmy wins for best drama series and a 96% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes, but The Pitt has been universally praised by real-life medical professionals for its unmatched clinical accuracy and its addressing of systemic healthcare issues, all while being one of the most entertaining shows on TV and never feeling preachy. Whereas most popular medical dramas capture audiences with addictive romantic storylines (Grey's Anatomy) or cerebral mysteries (House), The Pitt's hook is, simply, authenticity. In that regard, there's no show like it, but The Resident comes the closest. Set at the fictional Chastain Park Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, The Resident's cast is led by Matt Czuchry as Dr. Conrad Hawkins, the titular resident who uses unconventional, often rule-breaking methods to get the job done and save lives while battling the ultimate antagonist—the profit-driven hospital administration. And soon, the show will be leaving its streaming home. The Resident Is Leaving Netflix In November After Almost 3 Years The Resident's six-season network run is an impressive feat, but the medical drama really became a pop culture mainstay when it arrived on Netflix US in March 2024, just under a year after Fox canceled it. The series debuted at No. 2 of Netflix's most-watched series before climbing to the top spot, with 1.18 billion minutes of total viewing time in just under two months (via THR). This post-cancellation "Netflix bump" is almost as big as the record-breaking success that Suits enjoyed in 2023, with many new fans clamoring for the streamer to revive The Resident for a seventh season. While this never came to fruition, Netflix became synonymous with the popular medical drama, similar to shows like Gilmore Girls or Schitt's Creek that also found renewed success on the platform. This is what makes it so heartbreaking that The Resident is leaving Netflix on November 20, 2026. While the show isn't disappearing from streaming entirely, as it will find a new home on Hulu and Disney+, there's no denying that this is the end of an era for Dr. Conrad Hawkins and co. HBO’s The Pitt Now Has One Less Netflix Rival Warrick Page/HBO Max Even though The Resident will still be around, it's still leaving the world's biggest streaming platform, making it less of a rival for The Pitt. With Netflix having canceled its own attempt at a The Pitt replacement, Pulse, after only one season, the only real Netflix competition the Emmy-winning HBO show has is Grey's Anatomy. The Shondaland series has been on the platform for a whopping 17 years, having arrived on Netflix well before it became the streaming juggernaut it is now. Seasons 1 through 22 are available to stream, while the newest season, Grey's Anatomy season 23, is currently airing on Thursdays at 10 PM ET on ABC, with next-day streaming on Hulu. Netflix is expected to get season 23 in June 2027, approximately one month after the season finale. Choose the movie with the higher Rotten Tomatoes score. Fortunately, unlike The Resident, it doesn't look like Grey's Anatomy will be leaving Netflix anytime soon. So, while The Pitt may reign supreme, it still has some medical drama competition.
