Sign in to your ScreenRant account Fourth Wing has quickly become one of the biggest modern fantasy franchises, with Rebecca Yarros' Empyrean series building a massive readership through its addictive mix of dragons, romance, brutal military-school politics, and high-stakes action. With three mainline novels already released, the series has grown well beyond the books themselves, and fans now have several major projects to look forward to. For starters, Threshing Day will expand the world through a new collection of character-focused stories, while an official Onyx Storm coloring book offers another way to revisit the series. The franchise is also making the jump into comics with an upcoming Fourth Wing graphic novel, which has now received its first official cover reveal. Beyond print, Amazon's highly anticipated Prime Video adaptation is still in development, bringing Basgiath War College to live action for the first time. And, of course, the biggest question remains when Yarros will finally reveal more about the still-untitled fourth Empyrean novel. However, while we wait on pins and needles for that announcement, Fourth Wing is getting yet another major release in an unexpected medium, bringing the iconic fantasy series to Formations (via WizKids). Fourth Wing fans will soon have another way to step into the world of Basgiath with Fourth Wing: Formations, a new tabletop release that's currently expected to arrive in Q1 2027. Priced at roughly $20, the game puts a distinctly Empyrean spin on a traditional deck of playing cards, replacing the familiar four suits with Basgiath's Riders, Scribes, Infantry, and Healers quadrants, though the game itself isn't just a themed card deck. Formations has a unique and dedicated set of rules that tasks players with organizing forces of sorts from all four quadrants into effective units to defend Navarre. Gameplay is described as a unique variation on the classic card game "Kings in the Corner," so it's relatively straightforward to learn and ties in well to Fourth Wing's military-school setting. That said, because the cards still function as a traditional deck, players can also use them for countless standard card games outside of Formations as well. The complete set comes with 54 cards, 50 damage tokens, a rule sheet, and a travel pouch, making it a relatively compact addition to the growing lineup of Fourth Wing tabletop releases, such as Rise of the Wingleader. Preorders are already open through WizKids, although the company notes that the Q1 2027 launch window remains subject to change. Between its iconic Basgiath theme and straightforward card-game structure, Fourth Wing: Formations looks poised to be a highly approachable new game even for Fourth Wing fans who aren't necessarily hardcore tabletop players.
