Fourth Tasmanian road fatality in a week sparks police plea

A fourth fatality on Tasmanian roads within a week has led police to call for drivers to be safe "every time they travel".On Monday, a woman died and two others left in a critical condition following a two-vehicle head-on crash at Old Beach, north of Hobart.Tasmania Police said emergency services were called to the scene on East Derwent Highway, near Riviera Drive, about 1:30pm, where a blue Nissan and a silver Great Wall had collided.The female front-seat passenger of the Nissan was declared dead at the scene.The female driver of the Nissan and the male driver of the Great Wall were taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital. Both remain in a critical condition.Today's fatality comes after three people died and another two were left with "substantial injuries" when two vehicles collided on the Bass Highway, north of Elizabeth Town on Friday.Monday's crash brings the total of road deaths this year to 25, compared to 30 at the same time last year.Police are asking for anyone with dashcam footage of the vehicles ahead of the crash to call 131 444 or contact Crime Stoppers Tasmania anonymously at crimestopperstas.com.au.
