Four finance firms booked after labourer's suicide amid loan recovery claims

Latur police have booked officials and employees linked to four credit firms after a farm labourer's alleged suicide. The complaint accuses them of repeated repayment pressure and mental harassment.Latur farm labourer’s death highlights India’s growing debt trap crisis. New Delhi,Oct 30, 2026 17:42 ISTAllegations of harassment by loan recovery agents have come into focus after police in Maharashtra's Latur district registered a case against officials and employees associated with four credit firms following the alleged suicide of a farm labourer over loan repayment pressure. The firms named in the case are Equitas Bank, Shriram Finance, the Ring loan app and HDB Financial Services, PTI reported.Dattatraya Suryakant Kumbhar, a farm labourer, was found hanging at his house in Rani Ankulga village on Monday afternoon, a police official said. The case was registered by Shirur Anantpal police under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), based on a complaint filed by Kumbhar's wife. According to the police official, the accused allegedly repeatedly pressured Kumbhar for loan repayment and subjected him to mental harassment, thereby abetting his suicide. Further investigation is underway. The latest development comes a day after India Today reported that Kumbhar, a 28-year-old farm labourer, had allegedly been struggling to repay loans from private finance companies. A handwritten note found by police reportedly named four finance companies from which he had borrowed money and expressed his inability to repay the mounting debt. The exact amount owed had not been officially confirmed. His wife's earlier allegation that repeated calls from a loan app had added to his distress had not been independently established.THE DEBT TRAP FACING BORROWERSThe case has brought attention to the financial pressure faced by borrowers who take multiple loans but struggle to keep up with repayments, particularly when their incomes are limited or uncertain.A survey by debt-resolution platform Expert Panel, cited in India Today's earlier report, found that 60% of distressed borrowers who approached the platform said their monthly equated monthly instalments (EMIs) matched or exceeded their family's total monthly income. Another 40% said they were using fresh loans or credit cards to repay existing debt. The survey also found that medical emergencies accounted for 26% of borrowings among respondents. Family and personal expenses, including weddings and education, accounted for 22%, while 18% had borrowed because of job or business-related challenges. Another 15% took loans to meet day-to-day household needs. For some borrowers, a fall in income can make existing repayments difficult to manage. Nearly one-third of respondents struggling to repay loans cited job loss or a salary reduction as the main reason for missing payments. Another 28% said their EMIs had become too high relative to their income, while 19% pointed to multiple loans and over-borrowing.LOAN RECOVERY HARASSMENT CONCERNSThe Expert Panel survey also highlighted concerns around recovery practices. It found that 35% of respondents reported some form of harassment, while 17% said they had experienced severe intimidation, including abusive calls, threats and home visits by recovery agents. Many borrowers also reported receiving repeated calls from multiple lenders after falling behind on repayments. The findings were based on inquiries and counselling sessions with borrowers who approached Expert Panel for debt-related assistance. They should not be read as representative of all Indian households, but they offer a picture of the challenges faced by people seeking help with debt. The Latur case has brought these concerns into focus. However, the allegations against the four credit firms' officials and employees are part of an ongoing police investigation. Registration of a case does not establish guilt, and the claims will have to be examined as the probe progresses.- Ends
