Fortnite’s new Hollow Knight cosmetics cost more than the actual game

Hollow Knight’s main character appears in Fortnite as a sidekick rather than as a proper skin (Epic Games/Team Cherry/Metro) A bundle of Hollow Knight cosmetics for Fortnite is only available for a week and is being mocked by fans as ‘the type of greed they talk about in the Bible.’ It often feels like there’s nothing Epic Games won’t add to Fortnite if it means attracting more players, especially after they started worrying that the game wasn’t turning a profit. Even indie video games are fair game, so long as they’re widely popular, with Hollow Knight being the most recent addition. Not as a full skin but as a sidekick – a new cosmetic type established earlier in the year. Said cosmetic, along with a couple of others, has been added to the Fortnite store for a limited time and Hollow Knight fans have been taken aback by its pricing; including the fact that it costs more than the Hollow Knight game itself. Since the Fortnite store lists its items using the V-Bucks in-game currency, it’s easy to obfuscate how much cosmetics truly cost. In fact, taken at face value, you may think you’re getting a good deal since the Hollow Knight bundle is already discounted from 2,700 V-Bucks to 2,000. For that, you’re getting the Hollow Knight sidekick (which follows you around while playing Fortnite’s various gameplay modes), a Hallownest Grub backbling, and a pickaxe resembling the Knight’s Nail weapon. Assuming you have no V-Bucks to begin with, you’d need to buy a pack of 2,400 V-Bucks (because you can’t buy just 2,000) to meet the cost, which will set you back £17.49. And yet if you were to buy the Hollow Knight game instead, it’s only £12 on Steam and £10 on Switch. Even the sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, is slightly cheaper at £16.75. Unsurprisingly, members of the Hollow Knight subreddit have complained about this, with one now deleted post describing the Fortnite bundle as ‘The type of greed they talk about in the Bible.’ ‘I spent $24 on the complete collection of Kingdom Hearts games yesterday and felt a little guilty as I’m not having time to play it till November/December… Seeing this now I feel a little bit better, lol,’ writes XxX_Zeratul_XxX. ‘2,000 V-Bucks for a skin pack doesn’t sound as bad as $20, even though it’s the same thing, and this leads to the financially irresponsible (such as Fortnite’s child audience) choosing to pay up in hopes of getting skins that look cool when their favourite YouTuber uses them for content but affect nothing about gameplay,’ bemoans simonthebathwater225. Epic is also attempting to capitalise on FOMO (fear of missing out) since the bundle is scheduled to leave the store first thing on Thursday, October 15, just about a week after its arrival. The company would probably argue that V-Bucks can be earned in-game too and thus don’t need to be bought with real money. But 2,000 V-Bucks would still require quite a lot of grinding and even clearing a season’s battle pass will only net you 800 V-Bucks. Developer Team Cherry hasn’t commented on the issue; it’s unclear whether they’re getting any royalties from it but they certainly would’ve been paid at least a lump sum. The studio is meant to be launching a DLC expansion for Silksong, titled Sea Of Sorrow, at some point this year. Although nothing has been said about it for a while and they do have a long history of delays. The expansion will include ‘New areas, bosses, tools, and more,’ but considering Silksong itself was meant to be DLC for the first game and then ballooned into a full sequel, maybe don’t hold your breath.
