Former Kentucky QB Cutter Boley named Arizona State’s Week 1 starter

Cutter Boley has won the QB1 job at Arizona State. Boley, who spent the previous two seasons at Kentucky, has been named the Sun Devils’ starting quarterback for their Week 1 matchup next weekend against Morgan State. The Lexington Christian Academy (KY) product beat out Michigan transfer quarterback Mikey Keene for the starting job. True freshman Jake Fette was also part of the competition, but Boley separated himself and won out in the end. After seeing limited action during his true freshman season at UK in 2024, the 6-foot-5 Boley started 10 games for the Wildcats as a redshirt freshman in 2025. He threw for 2,160 passing yards with 15 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 65.8 percent of his passes, making the SEC All-Freshman Team. But once Will Stein took over as Kentucky’s new head coach, Boley hopped in the portal and transferred out West. His first FBS opponent at Arizona State will be No. 8 Texas A&M on the road on Sept. 12. Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham has been familiar with Boley since he was a star in high school at LCA. He jumped on the opportunity to bring in the Bluegrass native through the portal earlier this offseason. Boley entered spring camp as the favorite to win the job, and that’s exactly how it played out. “So I recruited him to Oregon when I was there. And I just remember he was a really good athlete. People don’t give him enough credit for his athleticism,” Dillingham said about Boley this summer. “He’s a very good athlete. Was a good basketball player. And then he had all the arm strength and all the ability of what he could do. “I remembered who he was and I remembered a lot about him from his visit out there to Oregon. It was someone that I knew I wanted to target from the beginning.” Boley should have plenty of help with the Sun Devils. Arizona State’s wide receiver room is filled with quality talent — some as returners, some as transfers that Boley helped recruit into the program. If he can cut down on the interceptions, he’ll be in good shape to have a productive 2026 campaign in the Big 12.
