Former Kentucky PG Tonie Morgan inks contract with Los Angeles Sparks

Kentucky women’s basketball’s single-season assist record holder is looking to make it in the WNBA. On Friday, the Los Angeles Sparks announced that they have signed Tonie Morgan to a player development contract. The 5-foot-9 point guard was originally selected by the Chicago Sky with the 32nd overall pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft, but was waived by the franchise during training camp. The Sparks will give Morgan another chance, though. The former Wildcat will be one of two players on developmental deals with Los Angeles. According to David Yapkowitz of Clutch Points, Morgan will be allowed to play up to eight games for the rest of the season. The Sparks hold a 10-14 overall record. “We’re excited to welcome Tonie to the Sparks organization,” Sparks Assistant General Manager Zach Knowlton said in a press release. “She is a dynamic playmaker who has consistently demonstrated the ability to elevate those around her. Her competitiveness, court vision and feel for the game make her an excellent addition to our development program, and we look forward to helping her continue to grow.” Morgan was most recently playing in the 3×3 Basketball Association. Before coming to Lexington, Morgan was a three-year starter at Georgia Tech. She started 95 of her 96 games played with the Yellow Jackets, averaging 13.1 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.9 assists, and 1.2 steals in 29.9 minutes per outing throughout her time there. She was an All-ACC Freshman performer in 2022-23 before making back-to-back All-ACC Teams as a sophomore and junior. Morgan opted to spend her final college season playing for head coach Kenny Brooks. At Kentucky, she had the difficult challenge of replacing All-American floor general Georgia Amoore, but did so with relative ease. Morgan averaged 13.8 points and an SEC-leading 7.9 assists for the ‘Cats, shooting a career-best 34.4 percent from deep along the way. Her 286 assists set a new single-season record for the program. She was tabbed to the All-SEC Second Team. Go be great, Tonie!
