Former Browns star, 2-time Super Bowl champ OL coach dies at 82

He was 82.Hoaglin “passed away suddenly” on Aug. 1, according to his online obituary. Born Jan. 28, 1944, in Alliance, Ohio, Hoaglin graduated from East Palestine High School and played college football at Pittsburgh. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound center was drafted by the Browns in the sixth round of the 1966 NFL Draft.Hoaglin played 11 seasons in the NFL from 1966-76, including his first seven with Cleveland. He started all 14 games at center for the Browns each season from 1967-70 and earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1969. Hoaglin also played one season for the Baltimore Colts, two with the Houston Oilers and his final season with the Seattle Seahawks.After his playing career, Hoaglin coached 24 seasons in the NFL from 1978-2001 and won two Super Bowls as offensive line coach for the New York Giants.Hoaglin coached seven seasons as OL coach for the Detroit Lions (1978-84), eight with the Giants (1985-1992), four with the New England Patriots (1993-1996) and five seasons as tight ends coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars (1997-2001).The Giants issued a statement honoring the late Hoaglin.“We remember Fred Hoaglin, our offensive line coach from 1985-1992, including the Super Bowl XXI and XXV championship teams,” the Giants wrote in a post to X. “Fred was a Pro Bowl center during his 11-year NFL career and coached for 24 seasons.”Hoaglin is survived by his wife, daughter, son, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family, according to his obituary.Zach Mentz is Trending Sports and News Reporter for cleveland.com / The Plain Dealer.
