Underinflated tyres with low pressure will make your vehicle burn through fuel more quickly. This is because your engine has to work harder when the tyres do not have enough air in to drive as smoothly as they should. Luckily, it’s quick and easy to carry out a pressure check and pump tyres up, with most petrol garages offering the equipment you need. You will need to know the right tyre pressure levels for your car before you take to the air pump – and this can usually be found inside one of the front door frames. Keeping your car as fuel efficient as possible is more important than ever, with the RAC warning that prices are “shooting up like a rocket” again after dropping slightly in recent months. Petrol prices are on the up again, heading towards 160p per litre, with diesel now approaching 180p. Most read in Motors Speaking on the spike in fuel prices following the latest tensions in the Middle East, RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: “All the cuts of the last few months are sadly being reversed, with the price of unleaded now heading back up towards 160p and diesel to a shocking 180p. “Unless the renewed conflict is brought to an abrupt end soon, it’s looking like UK drivers are going to suffer some stinging summertime pump prices.” Other tips drivers can use for optimising fuel efficiency include removing items from the car that add unnecessary weight. A weighed down car naturally means more fuel is needed for the engine to move it – so a lighter car will burn less fuel.
