Forget The Muppets, Wallace and Gromit have the best Christmas advert this year

So far, we’ve had John Lewis courting controversy (for some reason) with a decidedly okay advert; Richard Ayoade has teamed up with Argos, and Aldi’s Kevin the Carrot has returned to help find a missing dog. How very jolly. Yet if you were to ask the Metro entertainment desk what’s the best commercial we’ve seen this year, there’d be almost unanimous agreement. It’s the Walmart advert, which serves as a sort of semi-sequel/remake to The Muppet Christmas Carol. My learned colleague, Tori Brazier, even went so far as to declare it the best Christmas advert of all time. Wallace and Gromit are back in brand new outfits! (Picture: Barbour) High praise indeed, but I’m afraid I can’t agree because Barbour has just dropped an absolute banger starring two national treasures. Wallace and Gromit, the clay superstars from Aardman, star in a new short for the famed fashion brand. In the 90-second ad, our titular heroes head out on a snowy walk while Wallace waits for his roast spuds to cook. This being Wallace, though, he can’t just go for a stroll; he has to test his latest invention, the Walk-o-Matic and things quickly go wrong, leaving Gromit to save the day with a rather fetching Barbour quarter-zip. It’s all very Aardman and a real treat for those of us who love claymation, plus there’s even a cheeky cameo from a certain mischievous sheep. Gromit loves a bit of Barbour (Picture: Barbour) Honestly, it’s my favourite Christmas advert so far, managing to be as funny as it is heartfelt. Even better, unlike the Muppet ad, it’s a more original idea that doesn’t rely on nostalgia in quite the same way as the Muppet ad… even if it does happen to star two beloved characters from my childhood. Still, when I put it to Tori that this was the superior advert, she had an argument that was hard to argue with. Lovely and warm lad! (Picture: Barbour) ‘I will respectfully stand by what I said, as I felt that Wallace and Gromit for Barbour doesn’t quite capture the spirit like Wal-Mart did for the Muppet Christmas Carol,’ she wrote. Although she did admit, ‘Gromit in a dog jacket is adorable’. So in the spirit of the season and goodwill to all men (and women, but Henry Wadsworth didn’t put that in his poem), I’m more than happy to admit that Tori is right. The Muppets and Christmas go together like peanut butter and chocolate, like Christmas and carols. Some things are just meant to be.
