Forget Reacher, Mark Wahlberg’s R-Rated Action Thriller Is Quickly Climbing Streaming Charts

While having been part of the genre since his early acting days, Wahlberg steadily began making a name for himself in the world of action at the turn of the millennium with the critically acclaimed war comedy Three Kings and hit remake of The Italian Job. The decades since have seen him further expand his foothold with everything from the ensemble revenge thriller Four Brothers to Apple TV's hit Family Plan franchise and rare villainous turn in the Mel Gibson-helmed Flight Risk, many of which he produced. Now, one of his fan-favorite outings is climbing streaming. Helmed by Antoine Fuqua, Shooter served as an adaptation of Stephen Hunter's Point of Impact novel, which centers on former Force Recon Marine Scout Sniper Bob Lee Swagger as he's brought out of retirement in the hopes of preventing an assassination attempt on the US president. However, Swagger's insight is instead used to frame him for the murder of an Ethiopian Archbishop, putting him on the run to clear his name and find those responsible. With an ensemble cast also including Michael Peña, Danny Glover, Kate Mara and Elias Koteas, Shooter was met with generally mixed reviews from critics, many of whom commended the film's action, while generally knocking its script and characters. It not only overcame its mixed reception to become a modest box office success, grossing close to $96 million against its $61 million production budget, but has since garnered a strong fan following, earning upwards of $59 million on home media. Mark Wahlberg's Shooter Is Roaring To Life On Streaming Now, nearly 20 years after the film first hit theaters, Shooter has found itself quickly climbing AMC+'s streaming charts. At the time of writing, per FlixPatrol, the R-rated action-thriller is currently sitting in the No. 6 position on the streamer, knocking Milla Jovovich's Resident Evil: Apocalypse from the spot. Moreover, the film is now three spots higher, having begun ranking on the chart at No. 9 before jumping two spots the day before and one spot currently. It certainly shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that Shooter is once again amassing some solid viewership on streaming. The past few years have seen Wahlberg's thriller frequently landing a Top 10 spot on Paramount+, particularly this past May before eventually falling off at the end of June. More notable is that the film is gearing up to leave the Amazon AMC+ channel in a few days, and therefore, some viewers are likely seeing it on the platform's "Leaving Soon" list and wanting to watch it before it does. Will Wahlberg Ever Return For A New Shooter? Despite it being a fan-favorite in the star's filmography, Wahlberg has yet to return for any kind of Shooter sequel. Hunter's 1993 novel Point of Impact memorably launched a multi-book franchise around Bob Lee Swagger, and a three-book spinoff series centered on his father Earl, giving plenty of material for Wahlberg to bring to life on screen. Instead, as the Alan Ritchson-led Reacher would eventually do for Prime Video, Hunter's other novels would find new life with a Shooter TV series, with Phillippe taking over as Swagger, though Wahlberg did executive produce. The USA Network series didn't quite adapt the books in order, but stuck closer to doing so as season 1 marked the second adaptation of Point of Impact, while season 2 was based on Time to Hunt, the third book in the series, and season 3 on Black Light, the second novel. Similarly garnering mixed reviews, Shooter was ultimately cancelled after three seasons. Even while having handed the role over, Wahlberg did confirm in 2024 that he was interested in returning for a proper Shooter sequel, while also expressing interest in follow-ups to The Italian Job, Four Brothers and Oscar-winning boxing drama The Fighter. The two-time Oscar nominee even cited Skydance's acquisition of Paramount Pictures as a reason for its potential production, while citing his desire to do so with Fuqua and Peña also back. Given Shooter continues to be a streaming hit even beyond its main Paramount+ home, there is certainly a possibility that Wahlberg may one day get the chance to continue telling Bob Lee Swagger's stories. Additionally, with the continued popularity of other action novel adaptations like it, namely Reacher and the Jack Ryan franchise, Paramount and Skydance could very well find a way to give Hunter's books new life.
