As much as Obi-Wan Kenobi is a pivotal character in the wider Star Wars universe, his is not the story that needs to be expanded if the franchise has any hope for a future. Star Wars became a cultural phenomenon upon its initial release in 1977, with A New Hope launching a franchise that would not only endure for decades, but define modern sci-fi in many ways. However, while the earlier releases and the feature films all helped to explore the story that got fans interested in the first place, with the Skywalker lineage being unpacked in great detail, the more recent entries have failed to live up to anything that came before. And yet, the TV side of these stories has had some bright spots worth investigating. With stories that expand the narrative for characters like Ahsoka, Obi-Wan, and even Boba Fett, there has been some positive responses and intrigue, but, the most worthwhile shows of this new era have been more daring and experimental. Shows like The Mandalorian and Andor have earned their audience, and rightly been expanded on. But there is one show that went a step further, Skeleton Crew. While exciting projects like The Mandalorian and Andor bridged gaps between feature films, they also ended up being restrained by the stories that inspired them. The Acolyte was another original Star Wars story that began streaming on Disney+ in 2024, a few months before Skeleton Crew came out. Meanwhile, Skeleton Crew created a new and original concept, with new, original characters, and leaned into creating something that was less defined by the movies, and instead existed comfortably within the vast expanse of these popular space operas. And in many ways, the show exceeded other recent Star Wars projects. Skeleton Crew earned an impressive 92% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a similarly impressive audience score of 79%. It also picked up 17 nominations at the Children's and Family Emmy Awards, along with several wins and nominations at similarly prestigious award shows. Overall, Skeleton Crew worked as one of the best and most innovative entries in the Star Wars saga since it debuted in 1977, but despite this critical success, the show did not get favorable viewership and has since had no updates regarding the potential to bring these characters back for a season 2. Skeleton Crew Season 2 Could Further Prove Why Original Stories Are Important For Star Wars The Star Wars saga built its foundations on the Skywalker story, so it makes sense why so much of this universe revolves around these characters, and they continue to find new ways to bring them back. But the richest parts of this universe exist outside of the Skywalker family. Partly because they have been mined far less, but also because the world-building of Star Wars has been so exciting. Over the course of nine core movies, a handful of spin-off features, and a growing number of animated and live-action shows, Star Wars has unveiled dozens of worlds, with numerous alien species and space-faring adventurers with a variety of roles. And that isn't even mentioning the video games that have introduced new fascinating protagonists who arguably need their stories to be brought to the big and small screens. Star Wars has so much to offer, and Skeleton Crew is an extraordinary example of this untapped potential, with a coming-of-age story set in this reality, combined with incredible performances, and a world that has been established over almost half a century. It's time to leave the Skywalkers in the past and look ahead to a new generation with no vague and disappointing ties to what came before.
