For about $50 a night, this Bali hotel is perfect for awkward flight times

The Harris Hotel Kuta Tuban Bali is where I stay when I pay, especially if on a flight that departs very late or arrives very early at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport, Denpasar. Sign up now.The lookIndugle in a relaxing massage at the hotel’s small spa.From reception to restaurant to guestrooms, the colour scheme is simple: clean white walls with orange highlights. “Functional, simple, cheerful” were probably the architect’s starting instructions. If so, perfectly achieved. The three-storey hotel wraps around a large, blue-tiled, child-safe pool where the surrounding sundecks are a roomy retreat from the Bali din beyond. There’s an in-house spa and small but adequate gym.The roomThe room is simple, clean and with a pleasant balcony outlook.Harris Hotel Kuta Tuban Bali has 146 rooms and suites in five categories, ranging in area from 25 to 50 square metres, some with garden or direct pool access. I usually opt for a standard room with free Wi-Fi, multi-channel TV, tea and coffee making facilities, uncomplicated lighting, good shower and a tiny balcony. As the closest hotel (half a kilometre, as the crow flies) to the busy, 24-hour airport, what about the noise? The Harris is far from the flight path, and I’ve never heard an aircraft take-off. Accessibility features throughout the hotel include lifts and level flooring in public and private areas.Food + drinkHarris Cafe serves both Indonesian and Western dishes and there is a daily breakfast buffet. Harris Cafe, the hotel’s indoor restaurant and bar, serves a broad range of Indonesian, Asian and international dishes, starting with a generous breakfast buffet, plus eggs and more to order. The all-day menu, reflecting the hotel, is simple and reasonably priced, ranging from gado-gado to steaks, and rendang to burgers. Drinks, from mango lassi to margaritas. Among the choices for lunch or dinner, an authentic nasi goreng kampung is recommended. Quality wines are rarely cheap in Bali, but adventurous offerings here include a 2019 “Bali-Australia Cardonnay” at $10 a glass. During the day, the pool bar has a selection of drinks and snacks.Out + aboutIt’s an easy walk, or metered cab ride to malls such as Lippo and Discovery along nearby Jalan Kartika Plaza. On the same avenue you’ll find the Waterbom Bali waterpark and Kuta Art Market, plus scores of restaurants, bars and spas. Beyond those, it’s the bright-lights-big-city action of Kuta. There’s a free, twice-daily shuttle to Beachwalk mall on Kuta Beach. Meanwhile, a 10-minute stroll from the Harris brings you to unglamorous Jerman Beach, which lacks surf, crowds, deckchairs and sound systems. Good sunsets, too.The verdictPerfect for airport access at any hour, as well as for a longer stay.
