The fallen Peruvian giants have unveiled a new kit plastered with a mind-blowing 1,000 sponsors, raising over £220,000 in the process. Earlier this year, their situation reached a new level of desolation when they were disqualified from the professional pyramid and consigned to the Copa Perú. Before this snazzy new design, Deportivo sported a minimalist shirt, featuring a classy white base emblazoned with a red sash. While Austrian Bundesliga side Hartberg once made headlines for having 23 sponsors splashed across their kit – including a sperm-boosting brand. The astonishing shirt is a unique and desperate fundraising attempt, after dire finances forced the club to carve their kit into 1,000 advertising squares and launch the ‘Los Mil Sponsors del Muni’ (The Thousand Sponsors of Muni’) campaign in January. Local businesses were quick to snap up the miniature slots, listed for 200 Peruvian soles apiece (roughly £44), selling out the commercial venture within three months. Muni’s plethora of new backers includes nearby wineries and pet shops, all keen to pump life into the sinking club. Despite the short-term cash injection and international media storm their kit has whipped up, Deportivo Municipal were knocked out of the Copa Perú last weekend in a bitter blow to their attempted renaissance.
