Football match descends into huge brawl with player kicking and punching opponent

A HIGH SCHOOL football match in the US descended into a violent brawl on Friday. One player appeared to kick and strike another multiple times before a number of players from both sides ended up locked in a melee on the pitch. A loose pass played down the left wing left a Bobcats attacker and a Cobblers defender clashing shoulder-to-shoulder for the ball. The winger got the better of the duel and looked to burst away into the space with the ball as the defender tripped from the impact. But the full-back took issue with the challenge and suddenly charged the winger and shoved him over, sending him sprawling to the grass. The Cobblers defender then followed his opponent as he rolled on the floor before appearing to kick the downed player. Officials and coaches began running to the pair as the aggressor leant over and began repeatedly punching the downed man in the back of his head, while the winger tried to cover his head with his hands. The punches stopped and the Cobblers defender stood up as a coach and his own goalkeeper came to calm him down. Adults succeeded in pulling the pair apart after a few seconds of hostilities, before managing to get the situation under control and sending the teams away from each other. The inciting defender was sternly guided away from the pitch by a coach and did not make a return, while the victim appeared emotional as he trudged back to a figure on the sideline and was consoled. The play was subsequently suspended for a period of 10 minutes before getting back underway, eventually ending 2-0 to the Bobcats.
