A 13-YEAR-OLD boy has died during Spain’s World Cup celebrations after a fountain he was standing on suddenly collapsed. The teenager had climbed onto the structure to celebrate Spain‘s triumph when it gave way beneath him, causing him to fall. The shocking incident occurred in the early hours of Monday morning in the western city of Ciudad Rodrigo. The historic walled settlement is located in the province of Salamanca near the Spanish border. City bosses has since declared three days of mourning will be observed. A statement read: “The City Council of Ciudad Rodrigo expresses its sorrow and condolences over the death of the 13-year-old child. “The entire city of Ciudad Rodrigo mourns this loss and stands with the child’s family and friends in their grief. “What should have been a celebration of the Spanish national team’s victory in the World Cup has turned into a tragedy for the entire community of Ciudad Rodrigo. Most read in The Sun “The City Council also wishes a speedy recovery to the other people who were affected by the incident. “As a sign of mourning for this loss, the City Council’s flags will fly at half-mast from July 20 to July 22.” The fountain where the tragedy occurred stands at a junction known locally in English as the Fat Tree Roundabout. The name dates back to a century-old elm tree that once dominated the site, until it was felled after succumbing to Dutch elm disease. Tributes to the young fan have poured in, with one writing: “How unfair life is when tears of joy turn into pain. “It’s very hard. Strength to the family. Rest in peace.” “What a great tragedy. Sending hugs and strength to the family,” another added. “Ciudad Rodrigo is in mourning. Rest in peace, little angel.” Spain’s exuberant celebrations came after they claimed a second World Cup title with a hard-fought 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina.
