FM Nirmala Sitharaman urges Tata Sons and Tata Trusts to settle dispute swiftly

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has urged the Tata Group's leadership to settle the differences between Tata Sons and its largest shareholder, Tata Trusts, amicably and at the earliest, saying the dispute involving one of India's biggest conglomerates should not spill into the public domain.Speaking at a Finance Express event on Monday, November 2, Sitharaman described the matter as sensitive and delicate, and said the Tata Group was critical to the Indian economy. She called on the stakeholders to talk among themselves and restore normalcy quickly.“This is a very critical component to Indian economy and therefore, it has to be amicably settled among themselves, so they talk it out to make sure that it comes back quickly to some normalcy,” she said, according to an Economic Times report. The Finance Minister added that the dispute should not be playing out publicly and said the maturity of the group's leadership should help bring about an early resolution. Describing the issue as one that required commercial acumen and cordiality among stakeholders, Sitharaman expressed hope that the leadership would resolve the differences soon. She declined to comment on whether the government would make efforts to bring the two sides to the discussion table, terming the matter sensitive. The Finance Minister also acknowledged the contribution of the Parsi community in building Tata into a global brand and expanding its presence across businesses.WHAT IS BEHIND THE TATA GROUP DISPUTE?The tensions involve Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, led by chairman N Chandrasekaran, and Tata Trusts, its largest shareholder, headed by Noel Tata. The differences came into sharper focus at a Tata Sons board meeting on September 17. According to the Economic Times report, the board decided to proceed with a stock market listing of Tata Sons and reappointed Chandrasekaran as chairman. The meeting took place within a week of the Reserve Bank of India rejecting Tata Sons' request to deregister as a core investment company. The decision brought the listing question back into focus, as Tata Sons is classified as an upper-layer non-banking financial company and is subject to the RBI's listing framework.Noel Tata was the only director to vote against the decisions at the September 17 meeting, the Economic Times reported. Venu Srinivasan, another Tata Trusts nominee on the board, voted with the majority.DARIUS KHAMBATA DECLINES ANOTHER TERMThe Finance Minister's remarks come amid another fresh development in the dispute. Senior advocate Darius Khambata has declined reappointment as a trustee of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, while sharply criticising the Tata Sons board's handling of the September 17 meeting. In a letter addressed to Noel Tata and Tata Trusts CEO Siddharth Sharma, Khambata questioned whether the board would have acted in the same manner had former Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata been alive.“Would the board of Tata Sons have acted as it did on 17 September, had Ratan Tata still been alive? Of course not,” he wrote, according to a Moneycontrol report.Khambata also described September 17 as “a day that will live in infamy” and said the events had sullied Tata Sons' reputation and imperilled the image of corporate India.“The sad events of 17 September 2026, a day that will live in infamy, have sullied Tata Sons’ reputation and have imperilled the image of corporate India. No spin doctoring can mask what happened,” he wrote, according to the report.Khambata, who served as a trustee of both trusts, also opposed the proposed listing of Tata Sons, Moneycontrol reported. The disagreement over Tata Sons' listing and Chandrasekaran's reappointment has become a major point of friction between the holding company's board and Tata Trusts. Sitharaman's remarks underline the importance the government attaches to an early resolution, given the group's role in the Indian economy.- Ends
