A Florida mother stepped off her flight from Las Vegas and found police waiting at the aircraft door. Investigators say she’d left her four children – ages 9, 11, 12 and 14 – without adult supervision while she jetted off to Vegas. A dumbbell fell on her nine year old’s head. One of his siblings called 911. The woman said she was in Las Vegas for work, had arranged for a babysitter to help before school and check on the kids afterward, but not to stay overnight. She faces child neglect charges. The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office released this body camera footage of her arrest at the Orlando airport: She left for Las Vegas on Sunday, October 18, and planned to return Friday, October 23. Shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21, deputies responded to the home after the 911 call. They found all four children there without an adult. The 9 year old was taken to the hospital, treated and discharged. Officers reached the woman by phone. The children’s father took the kids to his home. The trip ran Sunday through Friday, but the children were placed with their father after Wednesday’s emergency. The woman was booked into Orange County Jail on four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm. She posted bond. In comments online, people write about being on their own when they were young in a way that’s no longer considered to be ok. Here the intention was to leave the kids on their own, with only occasional check-ins by a babysitter, for five days. The father took the kids when the police got involved. There’s no minimum age in Florida for staying home alone. And effective July 1, 2025, the law protects reasonable childhood independence including staying alone for a reasonable period unless it amounts to willful and wanton conduct that endangers a child’s health or safety. The state’s child welfare guidance says there isn’t a fixed age or a fixed number of hours that turns into neglect, relying on a particular child’s maturity, ability to meet basic needs, and judgment during an emergency. If the kid hadn’t gotten hurt and needed to call for help, this wouldn’t have been an issue, but a child getting hurt doesn’t on its own establish criminal neglect either. The fact that the child called for help would seem to suggest they were capable! I’ve written about parents boarding a flight in Barcelona while leaving their 10 year old behind because they had an expired passport, and a couple leaving their infant at a Ryanair counter while planning to fly because they couldn’t pay the infant fee at the closed check-in counter. I remember going off on my own early on in elementary school. I’d leave for the day, go to friends’ houses, and be back by dark. There were no cell phones then! But I still wouldn’t leave a 14 year old in charge of three younger kids overnight for five nights while flying to the other side of the country. I also don’t know whether felony charges are appropriate either. Topics on this page
