Florence Pugh’s latest look has women everywhere saying the same thing

Flo is never afraid to be bold on a red carpet, often opting for sweeping silhouettes, bold colours, texture and the odd nipple flash here and there. But her latest look might be her best yet, and it seems that millions of women* across the world agree as they unanimously stopped scrolling to gawk at her. (*estimated figures by me.) Florence, 30, made a surprise appearance alongside her co-stars Zendaya and Tom Holland at the London premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day on Thursday evening when she made the internet do a double take at THAT dress. The dress in question? An outstanding molten metallic number that was so gleaming silver it was almost white, complete with a dramatic winged V-neckline that jutted out over her shoulders. Every movement sent the almost impossible fabric shimmering, and she was a vision of goddess-like perfection in the haute couture Tamara Ralph dress. My Instagram has been flooded with pictures of Florence looking her absolute best, each racking up thousands upon thousands of likes. And the hundreds of comments on each post are bursting with adoring praise and, in some extreme cases, tears. Words to describe the look – which was expertly finished with gorgeous, subtle make-up and a slicked-back, minimal hairstyle – include ‘mesmerising’, ‘phenomenal’, ‘a masterpiece’, ‘the dream dress’, ‘absolutely flawless’, ‘insanely good’, ‘exquisite’. None of these descriptions are incorrect or hyperbole. There were cries of how Florence’s long-time stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray had ‘done it again’ and ‘better than before’. Quite right. For one evening at least, fashion discourse seemed remarkably united. It’s rare for a red carpet to be dominated by someone other than Zendaya. The fact Florence managed it tells you everything you need to know. (Zendaya, by the way, also looked beautiful in her nude gown, also by Tamara Ralph.) I think it comes down to a few things. First of all, it was a dress perfect for Florence: a bit daring, a bit classic, a bit unexpected. Tick tick tick. Then, it was the texture and the structure together – something about the cascading, slick material skimming her body juxtaposing with the oversized neckline. And finally, it didn’t need shock value in the way we have come to expect. In a world where so many red carpet looks are now often so skin showing or nipple flashing (nothing wrong with that, free the nipple etc!) or bottom baring, it was satisfying to see something on the modest side of things. Florence Pugh joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the best decisions the franchise could have made. Put aside the fact that over the past few years, she’s become one of the most talked-about women on the planet, with fans fawning over her every move, red carpet look and warm at-home cooking video. I know naysayers like to put Marvel down a lot, and there are some out there who look down their noses at the superhero genre as a low-brow form of filmmaking. It’s not. It requires an extraordinary range that few actors can truly master. Look at stars such as Chadwick Boseman and Robert Downey Jr as prime examples. Their performances as T’Challa and Tony Stark were career-defining and have touched the hearts of people around the world. Florence might have popularity in the bag, but none of that mattered when she was cast as Yelena Belova, the assassin younger sister of Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff. What mattered was if she could pull off this complex, scarred character. Thankfully, she’s a brilliant actress – one of the best of her generation, in fact. Prior to her Marvel debut in the 2021 film Black Widow, Florence left audiences stunned with her performances in Lady Macbeth, The Little Drummer Girl, Midsommar and Little Women. Then came the MCU. When we first meet her older version of Yelena, the former Red Room trainee is furious. She’s angry at her sister for ditching her for her new shiny life with the Avengers, especially as they haven’t seen each other since they were children. By the end, they’ve reached a place of healing… but that’s shattered by the time she appears in the TV show Hawkeye, during which Yelena is grappling with the pain of Natasha’s death following the events of Avengers: Endgame. But Florence’s most powerful performance in the MCU so far came in last year’s Thunderbolts, which had me weeping in the cinema and is one of Marvel Studios’ best releases in years. ‘Daddy, I’m so alone,’ she says to David Harbour’s Red Guardian, her face scrunching up in agony. ‘I don’t have anything anymore.’ I could feel my heart being wrenched out of my chest. The film provides a fantastic representation of the hardships of depression, and Florence’s performance is one of the reasons why. We’re now entering a new era of the MCU. We still have some of the OGs, such as Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Chris Evans returning as Steve Rogers. But it’s time to welcome some new leaders, especially as the Young Avengers come into their own in the next few years. Florence is one of the leaders of this new era, and it couldn’t be in safer hands. It wasn’t another Lady Gaga meat dress, nor a Rihanna Met Gala omelette frock, or a Zendaya robotic masterpiece. But there was just something about it. I’d even go so far as to say this is so far the celebrity dress of the year – better than anything at the Oscars or the Met Gala, even. It wasn’t a stunt, it wasn’t a ‘look at me’, it wasn’t a costume, it wasn’t a statement for the sake of it. It was simply breathtaking. Maybe that’s why it resonated so much. In an era where every celebrity outfit seems engineered to become a talking point, this one became a talking point simply because it was beautiful. We all wanted to wear it. We all wanted to swish around in it. We all wanted to feel how Florence Pugh looked wearing it.
