The duo were among the most high-profile omissions from the squad that reached the semi-finals in North America over the summer, falling to Argentina in heartbreaking fashion. Uncapped Brighton keeper Jason Steele, Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, Newcastle full-back pair Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento and Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly also made the 27-man squad. And there was also a return to the national team set-up for Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin following his impressive start to the campaign. But that meant, as always, plenty of big stars were left disappointed. Arguably the most frustrated could be Danny Welbeck. He was unlucky not to go to the World Cup after his exploits with Brighton last term and has started his Chelsea career in fine fashion – with three goals in two Carabao Cup games already. James has played all six matches under Xabi Alonso – managing 90 minutes three times in the Premier League. However, the Spaniard’s system means he is being deployed in midfield. And Tuchel has decided to take a look at others, instead. He also opted against reintroducing Harry Maguire into the fold. Maguire was very vocal when he missed out on the World Cup and made it publicly clear he felt he should have been involved. But the Manchester United centre-back has been overlooked once more. His Red Devils defence do not have a clean sheet yet, conceding seven goals to Hull, Ipswich, Everton and Manchester City. And Morgan Gibbs-White has still not done enough to convince Tuchel. That is despite kicking off the new campaign for Nottingham Forest with a goal and an assist in the 2-2 draw at Liverpool before then setting up another as Oliver Glasner’s men beat Aston Villa. But those five are not the only ones who may be counting themselves unlucky. Noni Madueke had an important role at the World Cup on the right wing. His Arsenal pal Ben White was booed when he came on at Wembley earlier this year, ending his England exile, and continues to shine for the champions. However, his relationship with the international team – and their fans – still appears complicated – although a groin problem may have ruled him out as a precaution anyway. And Adam Wharton was once more snubbed despite his superb performances pulling the strings in midfield for Palace either side of his World Cup heartache. Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney went as Harry Kane’s back-up options to North America but both miss out this time, too, as does John Stones and Eagles goalkeeper Dean Henderson who is nursing an injury. Eberechi Eze and Marcus Rashford have done little of note for their clubs so far this term but are both linking up at St George’s Park after this weekend’s matches, as is Kobbie Mainoo who did not get a minute of action at the World Cup.
