Food security master’s student Maha Khan used UK-grown cocoa which she harvested, fermented, and processed herself for the chocolate. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! Khan took on this challenge to mark the University’s 100th anniversary, naming it the Reading 100 Chocolate Bar. It is thought to be the first chocolate bar made using British-grown cocoa since 1932, when Rowntree’s first UK-grown bar was made. This confectionery treat was later gifted to the then six-year-old Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II. The university is home to a unique collection of cocoa, with more than 300 types of cocoa plants on offer in the Berkshire city. Usually, Britain must rely on supply chains thousands of miles away to sustain the nation’s sugar cravings, such as in Africa, South America and Asia. So far, only six Reading 100 chocolate bars have been produced, but there are no plans by Khan to make this a large-scale commercial launch. Khan said at the time of the launch: “It has been amazing to follow the entire chocolate-making process, from pod to bean to bar, without leaving Reading. “I hope this shows people just how much work goes into the chocolate we enjoy.” Comment now
