The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) nuclear security enterprise, working with the US Navy, has produced the first upgraded protective “delivery capsule” for the W76 nuclear warheads carried by Trident submarines. This is not a new nuclear warhead, but an upgrade to the reentry body and associated non-nuclear systems surrounding it. The first production unit was completed nearly three months ahead of schedule. For clarity, each Trident missile can carry multiple W76/Mk4-family reentry bodies, which separate from the missile after its powered flight. The reentry bodies are designed to protect the warhead during storage, launch, spaceflight, and the extremely hot, violent return through the atmosphere. In addition to protecting the warhead, the reentry body incorporates essential non-nuclear control, arming, fuzing, and firing components. The upgraded version, the Mk4B, is now set to replace the older Mk4As currently in use. Improving on the reliability of the Mk4A They are used in the current stockpile of W76-1 and W76-2 warhead variants. The former is the principal strategic version; the latter is the much lower-yield version introduced to provide a more limited nuclear option. According to reports, the NNSA has completed what it refers to as the first fully converted and production-certified unit. This essentially proves the design, factories, assembly procedures, and qualification processes are ready for serial conversion of the rest of the stockpile. According to reports, the upgrade will improve the “reliability” of the Mk4A capsules. The NNSA has not explained precisely what Mk4A weaknesses are being addressed or which components have changed. The announcement does not claim increased yield, range or accuracy, so it would be unsafe to infer those improvements from this release alone. Importantly, the announcement appears to only apply to the US W76 stockpile. There has been no public confirmation that the United Kingdom will adopt the Mk4B for its own Trident warheads. Britain does not field the US W76-1 or W76-2, although its sovereign warhead shares design lineage and technical commonality with the W76 and currently uses the Mk4A reentry body. The UK completed its own Mk4-to-Mk4A update in 2023 and is now developing the replacement Astraea A21/Mk7 warhead. It therefore appears unlikely to adopt the Mk4B as an interim upgrade, although this has not been formally ruled out. Completed months ahead of schedule “Sandia is providing leadership in system integration and is the design agency for the NNSA’s non-nuclear components in the Mk4B. We make sure all the requirements are met and that the system is qualified,” said Todd Simmermacher, a Sandia National Laboratories manager in nuclear deterrence. “We also understand touchpoints to make sure everyone is ready to perform the work,” he added. “NNSA is making good on our commitment to accelerate production for the nation’s nuclear deterrent and delivering the first W76 Mk4B to the Navy ahead of schedule,” NNSA Administrator Brandon Williams said. “As a former nuclear submarine officer, I have a special appreciation for the sea leg of our triad, which is essential to our assured second-strike capability. Enhancing the reliability of the W76’s reentry body will help ensure the reliability of the deterrent and strengthen America’s national security more broadly,” he added. “Once a unit is converted to a Mk4B, it is ready to head back to the stockpile and serve as part of the nuclear deterrent,” Simmermacher said. “It requires a Labs-wide effort and partnership across the enterprise to deliver this product,” he added.
