Firefly Revival Series Gets Encouraging New Status Update From Nathan Fillion 5 Months After Announcement

It was announced in March that an animated revival of the cult-favorite sci-fi series was in the works. The original Firefly cast is expected to reprise their roles. That includes Fillion, who played the lead character of Malcolm Reynolds, as well as Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Adam Baldwin. The project is being developed by Collision33, Fillion's production banner, which is teaming with 20th Television Animation. Reporting further clarified that the animated sequel will be shopped to potential buyers, and that no platform is attached to the series just yet. In recent comments, Fillion and Tudyk shared that the Firefly revival hasn't found a home. During an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan for HBO's Lanterns, in which Fillion returns as Guy Gardner, the actor offered an encouraging response when asked about the status of Firefly's return. Fillion notes that the project is not fast-moving, but in the quote below, The Rookie star also talks about not giving up on the animated sequel and being encouraged by the support he's received from fans: Nothing happens fast is something I have learned. I have also learned not to give up. I've learned that this is something that I want to do, and the amount of support I've gotten from the fans has been tremendous and heartwarming, and makes it easier to go out and fight the fight. Significant pieces are in place for the sci-fi favorite to make its latest comeback. That includes the writing team. The married duo of Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters are set to serve as showrunners. Their previous genre credits include the Arrowverse for Guggenheim, while Butters worked on Marvel's Agent Carter, so both are familiar with stepping into established franchises. There's even a timeline set for the show's return. It'll take place between the original Firefly series and the follow-up film Serenity, which was released in 2005. Both were spearheaded by Joss Whedon, who created the franchise. Whedon is not involved with the animated sequel, though he gave the revival his blessing. Serenity should give Firefly audiences hope. It is nearly unheard of for a follow-up film to be made for a low-rated show that didn't survive past a single season. But the fact that Firefly got its own movie speaks to how the devotion of its audience paid off. The television landscape has also changed dramatically in the past two decades. Firefly's ratings, which reached a high of six million live viewers and received four million by the end, would be desirable and actively sought after by most broadcast networks today.
