Nintendo Really Wants You To Try Out Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave's Dodgy Mouse Controls Published Oct 5, 2026, 9:26 AM EDT When a new Nintendo console launches, you can expect all of its early games to push its new features and quirks. Whether it was the Wii's motion controls, the Wii U's big screen controller, or the 3DS's titular 3D effect, it's almost like there's a mandate that early titles have to use everything a console has to offer, meaning that we get some games where unique controls are pushed for no good reason. That appears to be the case with the Switch 2's mouse controls. So far, the verdict is that using your Joy-Con as a mouse is pretty alright, but nothing to write home about. It works fairly well in some games where playing with a mouse feels more natural, but for the most part, I reckon it'll be one of those features that isn't really used again later into the console generation. Alas, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave just had to launch early on in the Switch 2's lifecycle, so it uses the mouse controls. It doesn't even use them particularly well, but they're actually unavoidable if you play through the tutorial, because Nintendo really wants you to give them a shot. Now, I am guessing that most of us put them down immediately, because we're being reminded that the controls do, indeed, exist. Nintendo Has Given Us Another Demonstration Of The Worst Way To Play Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave As you can see, Nintendo of Europe has shared a video of the mouse controls in action. However, what might not be immediately apparent from the footage is that you don't control a cursor to select options; rather, you just gesture to change which option you're hovering over in-game. This makes mouse controls fairly clunky - and a little pointless when everything is clearly made to be played on a controller. There's no free movement in battle, after all, as everything is split into squares. Judging from the replies, no one else is keen on this way of playing either. "It was so half-ass implemented, it doesn’t feel good to use," says one fan. "The mouse controls suck, they don't give you a cursor for the menus, instead moving it up or down goes up and down in the menus," says another player. "Picking a unit in battle has a cursor but the sensitivity is too low. I feel like mouse controls have been a big fumble so far." If Nintendo is going to keep pushing mouse controls, it might have to rethink how they're implemented. On the whole, it sounds like fans would like it to feel as if you were using a mouse on PC, rather than whatever we got in Fortune's Weave. Failing that, mouse controls could make for a neat accessibility feature, since it means you only need one hand to play the game. In the meantime, I feel that many of us will stick to controlling our Fire Emblem units with the Switch 2 Joy-Cons, thank you very much.
